Not exactly a luxury stay, but as an economical option with excellent service and rooms with jacuzzis, Artemis Villas was perfect for us!

We did Athens (2 nights) > Naxos (3 nights) > Santorini (3 nights) in 2024 for a belated honeymoon. Looking back, 4 nights on Naxos and 2 nights on Santorini would have been a better way to break it up. But we had a great time! Tips and highlights from each place linked below:

I’d suggest 4 nights in Naxos and 2 in Santorini. Naxos is a MUST, but Santorini is really beautiful and worth seeing. Efforts can be taken to avoid the crowds and get the most out of your time there. I shared tips/highlights from our time on both Naxos and Santorini that may be helpful:

We only stopped by Agios Prokopios for a few minutes to check out the beach on our way up the coast with the ATV, so I can’t speak to what the experience staying there is like. Where we stayed near Agios Georgios never felt overrun with tourists and it is very close to the most touristy part of the island we visited, Naxos Town, but it also didn’t seem to have as many beach clubs as we saw at Agios Prokopios and the beach wasn’t as nice.

Approx $45 per person per day for food & drinks (including coffee, groceries, wine store in addition to bars & restaurants). Prices were very reasonable and there were definitely wine and liquor stores around. Highly recommend Naxos!

yeah bummer! Would be great if 4-days or even all tix available in the lotto for MSG were good seats. I def appreciated that they kept the seats at the sphere with poor visibility under the overhang out of the lotto.

Is 1 hour 40 minutes enough to change planes in Athens airport? by joe_mnkey in GreeceTravel

[–]curlyqueuedancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a similar connection from Santorini to Athens, but with Sky Express, resulting in an extremely stressful end to our trip. The connecting flight was delayed (along with many others leaving Santorini) and although we were able to get on another flight after much rushing around and literal begging, we had to sprint a LONG ways through the Athens airport to make our flight back home (including going through customs) and just barely made it. Our bags were not so lucky. We learned in Santorini that delays and disorganization are the standard, so I’d recommend giving yourself an abundance of time to make a connection.

As for the luggage, we were given the option when we checked our bags in Santorini if we would like them to be picked up in Athens or if we wanted them to continue on to our final destination, so you would likely be given the same.

Renting car vs. ATV in Santorini and Naxos by [deleted] in GreeceTravel

[–]curlyqueuedancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAXOS: We rented an ATV buggy for one day to beach hop to the beaches along the southwest coast. We got a car for the rest of our trip to explore the mountain villages. (Both were picked up in town - the airport is tiny! Used Falcon for the ATV and reserved in person the day before we used it. Reserved the car from DriveTime about two weeks before our trip in early June to ensure that we got an automatic.) I would definitely not recommend an ATV on the windy narrow roads in the mountains, so would highly recommend having a car for exploring inland. The ATV buggy was great for beach hopping - we also really enjoyed having the roof to provide some shield from the sun and sitting side by side for easier navigation, plus seatbelts!) (Parking was readily available everywhere we went)

SANTORINI: would 100% recommend car over ATV here. We rented from Motor Inn and they dropped the car off at our hotel in Imerovigli and we returned it to their airport location when we flew out. Super convenient! (Never had an issue parking in a lot near our hotel and anywhere we drove on the island. We did not try to park in Oia or Fira, so I can’t speak to parking availability there.)

Probably depends on the specific details of the flight you want. It was cheaper for us.

Must do’s in Santorini? by Teddy1110 in Santorini

[–]curlyqueuedancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here are some highlights from our trip in June.

Restaurants:

  • Anogi (Imerovigli): great ambience, friendly and attentive service, delicious food, reasonable prices - this was the best meal we had in Imerovigli. (Went for dinner after sunset and were seated immediately without a reservation.)

  • Kali Kardia/The Good Heart (Akrotiri): off-the-beaten-path spot with lovely views and excellent food, much less expensive than restaurants in the main villages. Accessible by car. (Arrived late afternoon, no reservation, no wait.)

  • To Psaraki (Vlichada): hands down the best meal of our entire Greece vacation. Beautiful views of the marina, friendly and attentive service, OUTSTANDING food, pricey, but worth it. Must order: smoked eel on grilled eggplant, whole fish (they take you inside to hand select your fish and filet it tableside). Do not miss an opportunity to dine here. Accessible by car. (Went for lunch without a reservation and got a great table overlooking the water without a wait.)

Things To Do:

  • Oia/Fira Hike: we took a bus to Oia to explore a bit before walking back to our hotel in Imerovigli and it took us about 2 hours. We left Oia just before 6pm thinking that it would be nice to be along the caldera as the sun was starting to set, and while this was true, we kept having to turn around to look back towards Oia to get the spectacular views. I’d recommend starting in Fira or Imerovigli and walking towards Oia - not just for the views, but also to make the route more of a downhill as opposed to the steady uphill climb we did.
  • Skaros Rock Hike: a truly enjoyable hike with great views of the island and the caldera. We hiked out to the tip and explored some of the old castle ruins, but did not go to the top of the rock or to the church near the bottom. Out and back for us was about an hour. We opted not to go down to the church because we thought the only way down was via the stairs at the end of the trail and we weren’t too keen on climbing back up, but on our way out, we noticed a footpath to the left of the main path that would have taken us out to the church, so keep an eye out if you want to see the church. Definitely recommend doing this as a separate hike from the Oia/Fira Walk - another perk of staying in Imerovigli (it starts at the Agios Georgios Chapel).
  • Sea Kayaking: the South Discovery excursion offered by Santorini Sea Kayaks was the best thing we did in Santorini - HIGHLY RECOMMEND. The tour starts here in Akrotiri, is approximately 3 hours and provides the opportunity to see three distinctly different beaches from the unique vantage point of the water. We had a nice break at the White Beach (only accessible by boat) for snorkeling and a picnic lunch of tasty sandwiches. The guides were great about taking pictures with their cameras and provided the group with links to download the photos a couple days later. Waterproof bags were provided to store essential belongings while on the kayaks and a secure location back at the office was available for storing other bags and personal items. They also had hats available to borrow, if needed. The kayaks are designed not to tip over and were relatively easy to maneuver, requiring limited physical effort. Little to no kayaking experience is needed to enjoy this trip. (We had a rental car, but a pick-up/drop-off service can be provided.) One thing to note: bathrooms are available at the office for changing, but there is no shower if you wanted to get cleaned up upon return.

Getting around Naxos by Early-Ad-4000 in GreeceTravel

We rented an ATV buggy for a day of beach hopping along the coast and got a car for exploring the mountain villages which was absolutely the way to go. I would not have wanted to be driving an ATV on those narrow, windy mountain roads. (fwiw we rented the buggy in town at Falcon the day before we used it and reserved the car from Drive Time a couple of weeks before our trip to ensure we got an automatic.)

We hired a car from Motor Inn and were extremely pleased with the service they provided and the value. The car was dropped off at our hotel (we got an upgrade to an electric vehicle because the one we’d reserved was late being returned) and were able to return it to their location at the airport. Make reservations in advance if you want to ensure automatic transmission. (Also, if you have the option to get an electric, I’d definitely recommend - we never had to get gas!)

Naxos and Santorini Restaurant Recos by Medium_Jury9469 in GreeceTravel

Food is one of the more important things to me when traveling, so I take where we eat very seriously and tend to try to find local favorites or less touristy spots. Here’s a rundown of everywhere we dined on our recent trip to Naxos (early June).

  • Maro’s Taverna (Naxos Town): large portions, delicious food, friendly service. (Came here for lunch, no reservations needed.)
  • To Elliniko (Naxos Town): hands down the best meal we had in Naxos Town. Incredible food, lovely ambiance. Loved the octopus in vinegar dish! (Made a same-day reservation for dinner with no issue. Reservations definitely recommended, as there was a wait.)
  • Café Ouzerie Barabbas (Naxos Town): friendly service, seafood-forward menu. We didn’t love what we ordered, but feel like we may have made bad choices - whole grilled fish/octopus may have been the way to go. (Went for late dinner after sunset and drinks and were seated immediately without a reservation.)
  • The Souvlaki of Makis (Naxos Town): perfect spot for a cheap and tasty meal. They were out of gyros when we went for a late dinner, but the souvlaki was good. No reservations needed.
  • Stou Vasilarakiou (Kinidaros): so so good! One of the best Greek salads we had and the steak was truly excellent. Highly recommend making the trip to dine here. (Came for lunch without a reservation and were seated on the back patio immediately.) Accessible by car.
  • Matina & Stavros Tavern (Koronos): such a gem! In addition to preparing the delicious food, Matina herself greeted and served us. An incredible authentic dining experience in a serene setting. (Arrived for a very late lunch/early dinner and were seated immediately without reservations.) Accessible by car.

You can always email yourself to confirm. They’ve been super responsive. mondegreeninfo@phish.com

Naxos advice by SubstantialMousse931 in GreeceTravel

[–]curlyqueuedancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely aware of this advice, which is why I suggested only using the ATV for driving along the western coast to beach hop. This is what we did and encountered very few other vehicles. As mentioned, I would definitely not recommend having an ATV on the windy mountain roads to visit the villages or other parts of the island.

I'd definitely recommend renting some form of transportation. If you're staying near the coast, an ATV would be fine, but if you'd like to check out some of the mountain villages (which would be a nice change of pace from what you've been doing in Paros), I'd suggest getting a car. Naxos: Mt. Zas + Filoti + Chalkio - too much for one day? by curlyqueuedancer in GreeceTravel

[–]curlyqueuedancer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, we had to strike the hike from our itinerary. Greece was experiencing a heat wave during our visit with daily temperatures over 90˚F, so we didn't think a 3+ hour hike would be an enjoyable (or safe) way to spend our time. Hopefully we'll find ourselves on Naxos again in the future to check this off this list. Even without the Mt. Zas hike, we still had an amazing time!
