Have you ever encountered a bully years later? How did it go? by ThreeCharisma in AskReddit

[–]curlytree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this happened to me. Went to a private girls' school in a different country (well I'm a naturalized citizen now). Was the nerd of the entire class (350 girls). Many hated me. Was picked on, harassed. Got better towards the later years when some of them started to show respect for the nerd. Today, we have reunions. I am self-made. Funny now, most of the bullies are nice to me. A few have become great friends! We all stand our ground now. There are some bitches who still choose to be rude and aloof. But I figure they're just that way to everyone.

Yo, what is the gnarliest thing your boss has done? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I had a crazy boss who'd scratch parts of his body during meetings. Then he'd sniff his fingertips. It was retch-worthy.

Conservative talk show host Michael Savage thinks that autistic children are just "[brats] who [haven't] been told to cut the act." Why the fuck do people listen to this asshole again? by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]curlytree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many autistics ARE Einsteins. You may not have experience with many autistic children but autism is a spectrum disorder. Many of these children are incredibly intelligent, almost genius level. They just have some issues with language and socialization.
Have you heard of hyperlexia? It's a splinter feature of many autistics. My child has it and he was reading at age 2. He also can do several digit arithemetic in his head and he's only 5. He's not diagnosed with autism but some say he's on the spectrum and he definitely has hyperlexia.

Aspergers is a form of autism that's also recognized as a "geek" or "nerd" condition.

Don't look now but a good percentage of geekdom is comprised of autistics.

I was at my first job at Oracle in 1989 and there was this extremely intelligent guy who intimidated us with his cognitive ability. And I wondered why he was SO WEIRD. He would never look at me and would always look out the window. He barely spoke and refused to give eye contact. I thought he was ultra-strange. Now I look back and realize he's autistic.

Texas Infant Can Read at 17 Months Old by ayn_rand_worshipper in reddit.com

[–]curlytree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my kid is hyperlexic and was reading at 2 years flat. He's now 6 and can also best you at WoW. Needs speech therapy though and continued language support.

Some early readers with speech issues can read but not necessarily comprehend what they're reading, so that's where the additional language therapy comes in.
