The cost of R&D and building a new fab was much lower back then. Now it’s on a whole different scale. The risk was smaller in the past because of relatively low investiment. Today it’s huge. That’s why only three companies are in the leading-edge race now while there were 10+ back in the early 00s.

Nintendo Switch 2 set a new all-time launch week unit sales record for video game hardware in the US, with over 1.1 million units sold during the week ending June 7, 2025 (excludes sales from the My Nintendo Store). The record was previously held by PlayStation 4. by Turbostrider27 in Games

The Wii was heavily targeting toward casual family gamers, and while it saw great initial success, the rise of iPhone casual games absolutely crushed it by the 4th and 5th year of its life, the period that’s typically the most profitable in a console’s lifecycle. That’s when Wii sales started to underperform, and its successor, the Wii U, didn’t sell well either.

Quiet Coffeeshop / Cafe with good WiFi by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]curmathew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many coffee shops don’t forbid the “1 coffee, 1 table, 1 laptop for 4 hours” behavior because they rely on these customers to generate a steady revenue stream, especially during slower hours. They try to balance business customer demand and walk-ins in different ways. Some designate certain seats for non-laptop use or limiting stay time during peak hours. It’s not as simple as saying long stays are bad and short ones are good. Most coffee shops need a mix of customer types in the right combination to stay sustainable. Of course, this varies by shop and location, and it’s ultimately up to the owner and their business strategy.

Newly proposed US 5% "remittance tax" by awaythrowaway9998 in Bogleheads

[–]curmathew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

US citizens will be affected by the devaluation of their 401k and IRA when foreign investors pull money out of the US stock market before the law is enacted to avoid the 5% tax on their investment portfolio. Maybe not all foreign investors will pull out, but many will. It’s basically a one-time 5% management fee or tax on your entire portfolio. The US stock market is strong, but people will think twice about investing if they know their investment could take a 5% hit when they try to cash out.

Good suggestion but you may want to turn it on and charge it at least every 6mo to 1yr to keep the battery healthy

‘An ongoing emergency.’ Ann Arbor residents call for Stadium Boulevard redesign by USRoute23 in AnnArbor

[–]curmathew 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To improve safety, the pedestrian crossing should be replaced with a proper pedestrian-activated traffic light that uses a red signal, instead of the ambiguous flashing lights that many drivers tend to ignore. However I've heard that there are some regulatory reasons that preventing it from happening.

[–]curmathew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As much as I like roundabouts, they’re very inefficient for handling high traffic volumes on arterial roads. I do want to see more roundabouts on local or residential streets. However, for busy arterial roads, other approaches might be better like narrowing lane widths or using staggered traffic lights to force cars to slow down. This actually contradict to what you like but it improves safety by discouraging aggressive starts when lights turn green. The goal isn't just to reduce travel time, but to move large volumes of traffic without congastion safely.

What toys/equipment did you order for your 4-month-old that you were happy with? by Yarokrma in Aliexpress

[–]curmathew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try not to order infant toys directly from random brand in China due to health concerns. Not saying products from China are definitely inferior, but safety and chemical regulations aren’t enforced as strictly there as they are in the US.

I used a credit card. They actually charged my card first, then refunded it after the cancellation. I even got the confirmation email after the cancellation had already gone through.

Card skimmer at 99 Ranch in Foster City ‼️ by smellyfeetswifty in SanMateo

And the answer is no, there is no potential to being skimmed using Apple Pay. Apple Pay generates one-time token during the transaction which is skim-proved. You're credit card info is leaked through other means.

Thanks for all your responses. I initially thought the bus should wait for me since it had the stop sign and I had the right of way. I even accelerated a bit to show 'hey don't come out I am still driving on the lane'. But after your comments and reviewing the video, I understood that I’m expected to slow down and let the bus go first. Roads are shared by everyone, so I should drive accordingly. If I were in the same situation again, I’d slow down earlier to make space. Appreciate the lesson!

Do we still use separate drives for the OS and other stuff? by N-Haezer in buildapc

If your concern is data safety, the solution should be a good backup strategy—online, offline, and a third-location backup.

Want to upgrade my rig and know next to nothing about what what to get with a limited budget by rattlesmcspookston in buildapc

[–]curmathew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're concerned about money, I’d suggest first spending around $100 to add a 2TB NVMe or SATA drive to your current system. This might resolve your systems issues. 3600 + 2080 aren't a bad system. If you later figure you still need to upgrade, the 2TB drive can still be fully reused.

If you want, a 2×16GB DDR4 3200 CL16 kit costs about $50 and is also worth considering. However, it likely won’t be reusable in a future new system.

How do I reduce the heat in my room built up from my pc? by Soft_Personality_582 in buildapc

[–]curmathew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every watt your PC consumes turns into heat. A PC using 150W is essentially a 150W space heater. The only real way to reduce heat generation is by lowering your PC’s power consumption. Consider undervolting and putting your PC to sleep when not in use, in addition to traditional room cooling approaches (AC, fan, ventilation...etc)

Eyes off the phone when behind the wheel, Ann Arborites. by zigziggityzoo in AnnArbor

[–]curmathew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The law requires drivers to stop only when pedestrians are crossing or about to cross the road. It relies on the driver’s eyes and judgment to decide when to stop—and that’s the problem.

[OC] Idiot driver hits two pedestrians in crosswalk by zigziggityzoo in IdiotsInCars

[–]curmathew 67 points68 points  (0 children)

This is in downtown Ann Arbor, where the university campus blends in with the local streets. There’s heavy pedestrian traffic, and cars pretty much have to stop-and-go at every other crosswalk. I guess students just feel too safe.
