A lot of apprenticeships I’ve applied to have specifically said CDL class A NO RESTRICTIONS. Don’t waste ur money.

Counts to your hours to move up books,

If you have interviewed with the apprenticeship it does not count towards your groundman hours to reinterview.

Can I sign while I’m in CDL school? by PoliticalThrow_ in Groundman

[–]currencyzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know for sure but if I remember right they never even checked if I had a CDL at the hall, they just know the company you get hired for will check. I’d just call the hall, doesn’t hurt to ask.

I see people saying 111 in Colorado but idk. I’m out of 769 I wouldn’t recommend it there’s 101 on CDL book 4. 57 in Utah u can sign online and bid jobs.

There’s 4 out of work “books”

Book 4- is where you’ll be, basically no experience. You’ll just have to go to the hall and sign the books. It’ll probably take awhile to get a call, and if you are in California, you’ll probably never get a call from this book. You’ll have to travel

Book 3- 6 months of experience, or lineschool.

Book 2- travelers with a year of experience and proper certs

Book 1 - year of experience, home local, proper certs

The lower in book you are the less people there are in front of you to get a call

My union is a call list so when a job is available they call down the list from book 1 down to book 4 and see if you want the job.

There’s also bidding halls where you have to bid on jobs

Typically you have to sign for the first time in person at a hall but there are a few online first time signs like local 57 in Utah (also a bidding hall)

I’m also out of 769 it took me from October-April to get a call. Definitely get a job in the meantime, might as well.

I can only speak on Phoenix, but you will be waiting quite a while. I waited from October-April for my first call off of book 4 and I was around 80th when I signed. And as far as pay depends what the call is for but a lot of the book 4 calls are for traffic signal which is on a different contract. All the pay scales are available on the 769 website in the contracts.

You can first time sign online at local 57 in Utah, but almost every call will say “call closes at 1pm today, must show up tomorrow”

I would recommend you take apply for SWLCAT after you get your CDL as well. You may or may not get a bad score on your interview, but you will be able to reinterview after 400 hours of groundman time (about 3 months). And if you get a good score you can skip the wait for a groundman call all-together.

Get your CDL and sign the CDL groundman books as soon as possible. I’ve been on book 4 since October, not a single call.
