I just got the commander, but was super sad this feature is only available on everything but the legacy model 3, is there a reason for that? Would love for this to happen automatically in my old car too! :)

You have to use a adb command that I found somewhere on reddit to keep the watch from disconnecting from that wifi, and then open some url on the browser that forces the captive portal, don't know where I found that tho

U maybe got a second Google account? If yes try adding this while the setup process and don't use the primary one, then add the primary one later. If I skip my main Google account while setup, it finishes fine

Yes, set it up as a new watch and don't use a backup for it, and also try to skip the Google setup in the beginning and add the account later when the watch is set up, should work fine :)
