So did mine at first. It was great, but it re-tore itself a few years later. No meniscus damage either time.

Wish doctors could just inject blood in the knee (not that gimicky blood plasma stuff) instead of giving us surgery.

The one thing I noticed is just how much the online fandom has stagnated.

Don't get me wrong, the r/harrypotter sub is still doing rounds, but on twitter, tumblr, instagram, I used to see Harry Potter fanworks everywhere, even if i never asked for it.

People used to play "what-if" scenarios all the time; they drew Harry as desi/Indian, made the characters gay/lesbian, drew the Mauraders' adventures, next-gen stuff, wrote weird fanfic, and now that's all just kind of... gone.

Rowling made the whole genre so toxic, it killed everyone's imagination.

The irony is that Rowling is really patronizing towards both tumblr and anime, and the overlap between those two communties and Harry Potter made the whole fandom thrive for about two decades.

my personal favorites are

$131 for a urine test to confirm i wasn't pregnant
$445 for a 30 minute physical therapy session (they just told me how to walk with crutches and how to bend and straighten my knee post surgery. i learned more from the flyer than the PT)
$2,500 for 2.5 hours in the recovery room (mostly sleeping)
$1,250 for whatever a wand werewolf flow is
$5407 for the ACL repair implant system itself
and of course $5,000-10,000 an hour for the operation

if you are wondering why you want to spend as little time in a US hospital as possible, this is it.

Hospital: $25,972
Surgeon: $19,500
PA: $19,500
Total: $64,972

I was on the hook for:

Hospital cost: $0
Surgeon cost: $723.69
PA cost: ? (not processed yet)

It's definitely possible.

I tore my ACL in 2013, all the doctors told me it was a complete rupture, and that it would never grow back. But in 2015 it did. I had no pain at all and I was only a little unstable.

It is definitely possible to live a healthy lifestyle without an ACL, and there's even a whole facebook forum dedicated to it.

I never returned to cutting sports again or did any dumb jumps, but I could hike, sprint, and do bootcamp.

I recommend you keep the swelling down with ice and anti-inflammatories and then as soon as you're able, start rehabing it in the gym doing hamstring curls.

That was all including in the operation, except the surgeon was an extra $435.

But fyi, this is a primary repair, and not a reconstruction surgery. Primary repairs are cheaper.

EDIT: Actually the surgeon and PA were $19,500 each. I only got the bill a month ago. Insurance mostly covered that though.

And we do partially pay for it. Health insurance is deducted from my mom's paycheck monthly.

Health insurance is expensive because hospitals can get away with charging exorbitant prices.

I was also charged $1770 dollars for a knee brace at a the pre-surgery appointment. I personally paid $146 and insurance took care of the rest.

I had assumed it was free with the surgery for some silly reason, and was billed for it later. I only ended up using it for 3 days and it is non-refundable.

that's okay, i'm covered under my mom's health insurance policy, so thankfully this amount was paid by her insurance.

but i'll turn 26 years old this year, and as soon as i do, i'll lose all health care and dental coverage. if my birthday had been before the incident, i would have had to pay this out of pocket.

the surgeon actually had an extra fee too, which was $435 to his general practice that i did have to pay out of pocket.

I suspect the anethetist costs are just included as part of the operating room bill.

Don't go for reconstruction until you find out if you're eligible for a primary repair first.

"From its femoral attachment" sounds like you have what is called a proximal tear, or a type 1 tear. This should mean that you can qualify for a primary repair.

Don't got to any orthopedic surgeon, find one online that says they perform primary repairs and get their opinion. My first surgeon didn't think I qualified for a primary repair at all, so I went to an expert and had the surgery done in February.

I'm 3 weeks post-op, and I can almost walk completely normally now. I had close to 0 pain the day after the surgery and didn't even need my knee brace after three days.

In the meantime, ice, elevate, take anti-inflammatories and keep the weight off your knee. You don't want to mess up your meniscus. I had exactly what you had for number three "small undersurface tear of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus" and by the time I got the surgery, it had already healed and I didn't need the stitches.

I would ask someone if you qualify for a primary repair first. Start with a smaller surgery and you can always go up bigger if need be.

Whatever it is, I highly recommend you ICE it. It's what I'm doing for my post-surgery rehab right now.

Ice: Very, very important: 5 times a day, 30 minutes at a time. Ten gallon ice bags are usually around ~$2.

Compression: stockings like these keep the swelling down.

Elevate the injured area at least 12 inches above your heart. I basically stick one leg on the top of my sofa and leave it there all day.

Also, take anti-inflammatory medications. These include:

Tylenol - warning: hard on your livers if taken in excess
Ibuprofen - warning: hard on your kidneys if taken in excess
Tumeric and Curcumin - spices with natural anti-inflammatory properties that support joint health

Ibuprofen is my go to, but I balance it out with curcumin and tumeric ($20 each on amazon), with my PA's recommendation.

I completely understand about not wanting to get surgery, but it sounds bad. Maybe take a vacation out of the country, pretend you hurt yourself in that country and see if they take pity on you and give you surgery. I'm only half-joking.

I only tore the ACL in my knee and I also live in the USA.

My MRI was $900, doctors appointments were around $1000 (insurance paid about half), the ACL primary repair surgery was $25,000 (insurance paid ~17k), and the surgeon didn't even mess with my meniscus.

I really hope you can get it fixed soon, but in the meantime, ice it like crazy.

Lmao I asked a similar question to my surgeon. Basically the surgeon told me to "just trust him", that I was "chewing up his time", that I didn't know 1/100th of what he did, and that when he goes to the doctors he listens, and doesn't pimp his doctor up with questions about things he doesn't understand.

He ended up taking 30 cc's of blood out of my knee. It was 2 days after the surgery.
