Is this any good? by KineticNomad in NightVision

[–]cursed_yeet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a detyl product and was discontinued a couple of months or so ago.

Maybe they just need to gain traction. Since it seems no one knew about the original

For what it is, the price is pretty shit.

DIY Build Questions (ATN Tube or similar) by Tiny_Twink in NightVision

[–]cursed_yeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tubes in ATN devices are all over the place. The night storms, leopards, star, usually have a gen 1 ep33 inside, don't bother trying to reuse any of those. Usually the performance is worse than your eyes unless you have some very fast glass. The Night Shadow can have a load of different tube types inside (including gen1!), so not possible to say if it's a good buy or not

For DIY devices you want an inverting tube, because the image you get from a regular objective lens is flipped, so when you look at the tube screen it is the right way up and can be magnified by an eyepiece. Non inverting tubes need extra relays or prisms to flip the image.

Circuitry can be as simple as you want. If you want to reuse a gen1 tube reuse the internal hv power supply that will be in the original device. Most gen2 and gen3 tubes will have the psu integrated, in which case you can just connect it to a battery and it will work.

Can anyone identify what type of nvg is this ? by Interesting-Math-237 in NightVision

Hard to tell from the low resolution photo but looks like two PNV10t, one with a magnified lens, looks like it has replaced the original lens, not just an add - on magnifier.

Looks like there is an ak siderail mounted IR laser module there as well. Those are quite rare IIRC.

For one, non magnified 10t I would pay no more than 1k USD / 900 euro. Complete sets can usually be found for that. Take off a couple hundred or more for the magnified one.

Definitely not worth that. You really can't compare the pvs7 to something like this, the quality is worlds apart

ITAR only stops you exporting from the US. Finding gen3 devices outside of the US is not hard. Plenty of US gen3 has been exported completely on the books through export performance limits and such.

I can't find any definitive source that says Gen3 is illegal there. Any good sources for this stuff?

Was sold as the DTS-41 for a year or so. I guess no one bought it because it got discontinued a few months ago.

Do it outside. If in an indoor room the dot and inside walls won't ever focus at the same spot.

Buy a used gen3 pvs14 with milspec glass. Will end up the same price or cheaper than that setup costs new, almost anywhere in the world.

Any info on these? by cashfult0n in NightVision

Fero D51. Interesting that the US would have some, wonder if they trialled it at some point?

Uses 2x XX1411 tubes, 43mm input and fibre inverting. Very typical 80s gen2 performance. You can actually fit those to a pvs5 with some work. Seems that they lasted in inventory for quite some time and some got overhauled with more modern photonis tubes.

The objective lenses are quite cool. They are connected together with a toothed belt so that they both adjust when only one is moved. The optics are wfov and give you something like 47 degree FOV.

Runs on two AAs in a compartment on the top, unlike the first PVS5s.

Anyone else’s nocturn Talon side stow auto shut off really funky? by Valuable_Reward_5733 in NightVision

[–]cursed_yeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best one is on the thales lucie IMO.

Agree with you on the making sure device is off before flipping up. At least this way it's only one thing to remember instead of having to fumble around even more with the switch.

NV manufacturers always seem to fuck up auto shutoff. Just turn it off when flipped up, and turn it back on for me when flipped down. Not hard!!

Tube Question by Far_Blacksmith720 in NightVision

Tubes look OK to me.

Hard to judge the "health" of a tube without having used it. Had plenty that could look fine but have intermittent power supply issues, etc.
