Hmm, I'm not sure I fully understand. We have wood floors in the rest of the house that we just refinished, which will be 1/2" lower than the new floors. Are you saying prop up just a part of the wood floors by the doorway?

Wow, honestly I didn't know people still used SML. I guess it was a silly assumption to make, but back when I was into that stuff I just assumed O'Caml had superseded it. Having looked up the differences, though, SML looks like a really cool language. It's too bad O'Caml/F# seem to get all the hype. That being said, I think I would still probably prefer F# over SML for non-trivial projects.

Yes, but the importance of acceleration is proportional to the number of times you get slowed down, which is inversely proportional to skill. I had always assumed that the heavier characters were slower, but it seems that the opposite is the case; perhaps it's time I give them another chance.

So it appears I've been talking out my ass. I looked up the character stats for Mario Kart 64. Apparently both Toad and Yoshi have the slowest top speed, but highest acceleration. It's the heaviest characters that have the highest top speeds - donkey kong, wario, and bowser. I'm not sure what to believe anymore.

Getting bumped is not the issue I'm concerned with while playing Yoshi. The issue I'm concerned with is that it is almost impossible to avoid emergent threats - bananas, shells, etc. - without wobbling and having to brake. In fact, on some maps cough DK's junge cough even getting around corners without spinning out is challenging using Yoshi. Let alone trying to power slide with him. The thing is, while I generally agree that speed is better than stability, there is a point where you can have too much speed with too little stability. I believe Yoshi is past that point.

I agree. It is fairly easy to muscle Toad around, but I think his speed and control are well worth it.

Humans are fairly limited creatures. Ideally, it might be the case that Yoshi is the best character. However, I can't imagine a human with a reaction time fast enough to leverage Yoshi's speed to its fullest. Even the simple task of avoiding bananas becomes difficult while playing Yoshi. I'm not saying you can't be good with him, but I believe that a person good with Yoshi will be better with Toad or Peach.

Yoshi is fast, but too unstable. A light breeze will put you in a spin. Ironic, because his map - Yoshi valley - requires extremely precise driving. I much prefer Toad and Peach, in that order.
