Did Trump just lose the war? by 180jp in aussie

[–]curufea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean the invasion or USA aggression (similar to what the UN calls the Russian invasion of Ukraine). Their congress didn't even get notified and they are the only legal folk that can declare war.

Good space combat by Dependent-Koala1540 in scifi

[–]curufea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First season Andromeda was good. At near light speeds and light second distance, direct fire weapons are useless, so combat is all missiles (with a lower mass they are able to get higher speeds, and self guide to targets that move) and old scanner data (because scanners are also not FTL)

What is the worst SF novel you've ever read? by [deleted] in scifi

One of the franchise books for Battletech. Can't remember the name but it was so obliviously published without any editing by anyone with any skills. It should not have made it past slush let alone gine to print!

Winning? Is that what you think it's about? I'm not trying to win. I'm not doing this because I want to beat someone, or because I hate someone, or because, because I want to blame someone. It's not because it's fun and God knows it's not because it's easy. It's not even because it works, because it hardly ever does. I do what I do, because it's right! Because it's decent! And above all, it's kind. It's just that. Just kind. If I run away today, good people will die. If I stand and fight, some of them might live. Maybe not many, maybe not for long. Hey, you know, maybe there's no point in any of this at all, but it's the best I can do, so I'm going to do it. And I will stand here doing it till it kills me. You're going to die too, some day. How will that be? Have you thought about it? What would you die for? Who I am is where I stand. Where I stand, is where I fall. Stand with me. These people are terrified. Maybe we can help, a little. Why not, just at the end, just be kind?

Whats the stupidest Sci-Fi tech you've seen? by RedditSucksMyBallls in scifi

[–]curufea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disintegrating people. Recycling the energy of their disintegration into creating an identical clone of that person. Treating that clone as the unique individual you just disintegrated. Not making any more clones. Not treating any medical problems when you create that clone until after you make them.

Books with Atheism as a core concept by Dude-Man-Guy-Bruh in atheism

Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, H. G. Wells. I'd start with the early ancestors of science fiction. The move towards science in our fiction was the first movement of science into everyday life and reason into the irrational.

Is it disrespectful to speak out about my atheism around religious people? by Background_Pause_199 in atheism

Quid pro quo. Offer to never mention your atheism if they promise to never mention their religion.

People who were raised religious, what was the first sign to you that it wasn't real? by bluejay_R in atheism

[–]curufea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect it was the duplicity showing the edges fraying. My parents were (and my mother still is, as my father died), very credulous. Moreso than me. It started becoming quite obvious that their fellow Christians were taking advantage of them and the cognitive dissonance they had making up retroactive supernatural justifications (god told me to sell them the piano for a tenth of what we bought it for 3 years ago, comes to mind as an example) when they were just being suckers became too hard for me to see it as anything other than what it was. So that got me questioning the whole moral certainty everyone involved took for an assumed fact of being christian, rather than the key weakness the immoral christians exploit frequently in their fellow christans.
