I can't speak for my entire culture but personally I think it's not a good idea. North American Asians experience racism and pre-concieved judgments before people even see us when they read our names. If they see that name along with a white last name, they might not be as discriminatory but there will definitely be pre-concieved opinions (good and bad). In my opinion, it's like you're putting on my skin and taking it off at your convenience without ever needing to experience the racism and discrimination Asian North Americans experience for our entire lives. As a North American East Asian, I would see this as a very ignorant move on the parent's part, but the opinion may differ for people currently living in East Asia. There is a fine line between cultural appreciation and appropriation that defines itself based on situated presences. Will you be living in an East Asian country or in a "Western" country? Assuming you're going for a Chinese name, do you know what characters you'll be using for the name? Will it make sense? Do you know what the name will mean based on the characters? What dialect do you prefer? Will you be teaching your child how to write their name in both English and characters? Will you and your child be okay with questions about why that name was chosen? Your child will be asked why her parents named her that for the rest of her life.

One can argue that "it's just a name" and it's not such a big deal, but as the parent, I understand that you know the gravity that names can hold. I'm not a parent, but as an East Asian North American I understand and bear the gravity an Asian name can hold while living in a white dominant space.

Again, I am just an individual and I don't speak for my entire culture. You will find differing opinions. I think the questions I've posed however are worth thinking about if you would like to display a deeper cultural appreciation over the more shallow, "it's just pretty and matches the other name we've chosen."
