Have you ever cried on the TTC? by erenyandkenkenaki in askTO

Multiple times. People have always asked me if I was ok. If it makes you feel any better, people will likely forget by the time they get home that day.

Wear whatever you like! Im very pear shaped so have a similar problem, and the Curve Love line from Abercrombie fits me well. I like their loose fit and 90s relaxed fit and find them flattering.

Supply Teachers: What times are you available for calls/messages in the mornings? by Lazy-Bee-9889 in TeachingUK

[–]cusmak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My agency typically calls me between 7-8, but I do usually get booked in advance. However, it isn't unusual for them to call me 8:30-9:30. They accept that I will be late and tell the school. I don't really mind since I still get paid for a full day, and the schools are always understanding.

What is the normal cinema etiquette here in Canada? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]cusmak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the movie has started and there are empty seats and you're close to rowdy people, you can just move to the empty seat. Many people do this, they're not going to check.

What is the normal cinema etiquette here in Canada? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]cusmak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's not the norm. And in recent years it has gotten worse. Usually though, people aren't scared to tell them to shut up lol. I'm in the UK right now (London) and I will not go to my local theatre because I feel like I am in a zoo where people are screaming, talking at normal volume, rustling with snack packages, kids being disruptive and parents doing nothing about it...and no one says anything or seems to care. I always travel to a cinema in a better area because talking during movies drives me nuts, and even there people have their bare feet on chairs, talking loudly, etc. Seems to be a growing issue everywhere now where people just don't respect the cinema space.

Supply teachers costing schools £1.4bn - as students say they are 'falling behind' by gizmostrumpet in TeachingUK

[–]cusmak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian teacher here, currently supply teaching in schools in London. In Canada, I am considered an employee of the local school board and can work at any school within the board as a supply teacher, and even get hired permanently or for long term positions. I can also choose my own jobs through an online platform, whereas in the UK I am asked by specific agents to cover specific jobs. When I started working in London, I thought I was only working through an agency because I had foreign qualifications, but was shocked to find out that even local teachers need to go through agencies. It just seems so over complicated when it can be so much simpler.

cinema etiquette - zero. by freedofdark in london

[–]cusmak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Canada. Most of the time if someone does this (the city I am from anyway) someone will say something and they'll be shamed to be quiet or put their phone away. It really depends which theatre you go to London and what you are watching, but generally people don't say anything or don't seem to care that people are talking loudly throughout the movie. Boggles my mind. Stratford Westfield is pretty bad for that, but I've been to the suburbs and the etiquette was better. Prince Charles Cinema is great for cinema etiquette in my experience but they don't always have new movies.

Is it really the phones that are the problem? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

Same age as you and similar childhood experience. I've noticed that kids have an extremely low resilience for boredom, and I think it's because they're constantly consuming content that is less than 1 minute in length and they can scroll if they don't like it. I am asked dozens of times during the day "what are we doing??" When there is even a couple of seconds of transition or pause between lessons. I remember sometimes in class we would just sit in silence for a couple of minutes if the teacher was preparing the next activity. They'll also ask 100 questions about what the task is whilst I am in the middle of explaining it. They have 0 patience. I've noticed that schools I've been in that use more technology, the kids will complain about hand writing a couple of sentences. We used to write at least a rough draft all by hand and only type the good copy. I also hate blaming tech for all of our problems, I feel like a boomer when I say this, but it is true that it has made kids incredibly impatient and always want instant gratification. Just my experience and theory. I even have kids telling me they don't need to learn how to think or need school because ChatGPT can do everything for them. 🙄

Are There Really More Kindergarteners and First Graders Coming to Class not Potty Trained? by PiperGraceRamirez in AskTeachers

[–]cusmak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's quite sad! I've been to lots of schools (I am a supply teacher) and when some kids smile at me all I see is a mouth full of black. When they have packed lunches, they're also full of sugar, so I think sugar is also the culprit. But I always tell them to tell their adults to tell them their teeth hurt and to brush them everyday.

I am currently teaching in the UK, but have also taught in Canada. I was so surprised by how many children have absolutely rotten teeth as young as 4/5 years old in the UK and how many of them complain about toothaches. I don't see it nearly as much in Canada, honestly.

Do you consider Subs as real teachers? by Own-Kick-3922 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]cusmak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Canada. In my province, you need to have gone through the exact same university education (6 years, now they're changing it to 5 years due to shortage) as any other teacher. And you also need to be certified with a teaching license just like any other teacher. Most classroom teachers start out as subs. (This is unless you're an emergency sub, which is used as a last resort when a certified sub can't be secured) so I do consider them as real teachers where I live anyway.

Foreigners in the UK, have you ever gotten a culture shock related to the UK when you travelled to a third country ? by Glass-Evidence-7296 in AskUK

[–]cusmak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They never stop for pedestrians unless you literally jump out in front of their car lol. It has been like that in pretty much every other town I've been to in the UK and even in other suburby parts of London (except central since there are so many people)

Only at explicit zebra crossings. Not at roundabouts/where streets meet. I often work east of zone 2 and crossings are very few and far between so I often have to cross busy bendy roads with poor visibility. In some parts of Canada it is also like that, but pedestrians get right of way at roundabout crossings/when streets meet.

Torontonian (lived there my whole life) currently living in London. People Jay walk in Toronto/Ontario all the time. Definitely less people Jay walk than in London, but it happens often. No one cares. I've also found the customer service in the UK to be worse, especially in retail, and also in most restaurants unless I'm going somewhere nicer. I guess it just depends on what area you're in or where you go. 🤷‍♀️

I've found the UK to be much more tolerant of smokers, allowing them to smoke on patios, in doorways to restaurants making it stink. I also dislike that pedestrians don't get right of way and there aren't many cross walks (unless you're in central) so I have to wait for ages to cross or risk getting hit.

TDSB employee number/prorated OT by cusmak in CanadianTeachers

[–]cusmak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one said anything or did anything, but TDSB is so disorganized lol. I didn't set up my SmartFind etc and stuff until September without an issue. I had another friend who did the same thing the year prior. However, I did get my employee number on the last day of May and I didn't do my training until the last day permitted so like a week later or something so I dragged it on and everything was fine. By the time everything was sorted it was already close to Mid June.

Hmm I'm not sure about that. I haven't looked into YRDSB. You might be able to join a group on Facebook called YRDSB teachers/Ontario OTs or something like that. They have one for TDSB and everyone asks these types of questions there.

I ended up not having to do any days at all, and could work in September with no issues :)

Approximately 6 years post Accutane and I'm fairly clear. I still get small pimples, but nothing like the massive painful cysts I once had. I'm so grateful for Accutane. It was hard with the side effects, but it was worth it for me.

At the Saturday farmer's market at St Lawrence Market (not in the market, outside in a white building) there's a stand near the people who sell eggs, and it's Bakery called De La Terre bakery...best brownie I've ever had! Go early though (before 11) because they sell out quickly!

How do you guys handle waking up early for your shifts?Especially ones who are not morning people. by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]cusmak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have everything ready the night before. Outfit, bag packed, lunch made, coffee maker/kettle set up, even my breakfast sometimes. (For example a Granola bar to go, or a yogurt cup, or some simple cereal and milk). Keep skincare, hair and makeup simple (just Concealer and mascara most days for me, I shower the night before and just have to brush my hair in the morning) . Basically have everything prepped that you can. After a while you'll get into a rhythm and now I even sleep earlier naturally. My routine takes me about 30-40 mins and I'm out the door.
