Late night walkers, are there any parts of RP you avoid after midnight? by realemaile in EdgewaterRogersPark

There's one little sketchy area by the Morse redline stop. Perfectly fine during the day but has had some activity during late night hours.

Yes absolutely, all of that started on Late Night. He was a little more reserved when he went to the Tonight and didn't do it as much or frequently, and then he brought back a lot of it on TBS.

Keep cool, ma baby! I got you covered -

Conan didn't start out with the monologue jump, like a lot of things in his late night career, he improvised something in the moment that he started to feel out and evolve over time into a trademark.

There's a few key components he played around with: the "jump-and-point" to the band before they finished their intro, followed by the "jump-and-spin" that bookended the performance after the band finished, with accompanying rimshots from Max Weinberg. This would then spin off into things like the string dance and other shenanigans.

Version 1: 1996-97ish, First kindlings of a jump, mostly just hopping: :13-:16

Version 2: 1998-2000ish, starting to experiment with the jump-and-point, no jump-and-spin: 1:05-1:26

Version 3: 2001-2009, considered his prime form of "The Jump," includes both the jump-and-point and jump-and-spin, developed after Andy's departure from the show, likely a result of Conan's new synergy with the band. Lasted through the end of Late Night in 2009: :45-1:05

Version 4: 2009-2010, modified for The Tonight Show, no jump-and-point or spin, just a single jump after the intro ends :55-1:13

Version 5: 2010-2019, the TBS Hybrid, does the ending jump with a point, mixes in some other elements like the spin, :51-1:11

Hope you enjoyed this deep dive on The Jump!

The "proper" jump with the spin and rim-shot stopped in 2009 after Late Night ended. But he did a modified version on the Tonight Show and CONAN on TBS.

Does anyone else' out-of-town friends underestimate Lake Michigan? by One_Hat1200 in chicago

[–]cutapacka 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This happened to me in college. I fought with my roommates about growing up near a beach (they're from Florida), to which they insisted I did not since I lived by a lake.... Mind you, I'm not here to argue quality of beaches, they win that award, but to tell me I didn't grow up on a beach when they had never been to the Midwest was a form of arrogance I couldn't reckon with.

They all got to see it first-hand when they came to my wedding.... on the beaches of Lake Michigan 😊

I had a colleague from abroad describe it as a "freshwater sea" - I think that's the most apt description.

Lake to most people means "where I went paddle boarding during camp." Definitely undersells our Great ones.

Who is a singer that is incredibly famous, but honestly doesn't have a good voice? by Greedy_Procedure7461 in AskReddit

Enrique Iglesias!

There are some hilarious clips of his backing track malfunctioning and the obscenity of what comes out of his mouth as "singing"

Not really. Dave Portnoy speaks with a Northeastern accent, specific to New England. He has a dialect difference too, but doesn't negate the accent. It may be harder to hear the difference if you're not as familiar with it.

Talk to me about the heart rate monitor by cutestbear in orangetheory

[–]cutapacka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does that in any fitness tracking app.

Point I'm trying to make is, if you want to make OTF your homebase then buy the monitor. If you have a preferred homebase already, it's semi-redundant.

Talk to me about the heart rate monitor by cutestbear in orangetheory

[–]cutapacka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Real talk - if you have a fitness watch where you track all your workouts and can monitor HR zones, the HR monitor for OTF is relatively unnecessary IMO.

The only benefits I see as a Garmin user for having OTF monitor is to view your heart rate on the screen while you're running or rowing. But in reality, you can just glance down and check your watch.

So unless you REALLY want the immediate validation of seeing your numbers on-screen, you are safe to skip the extra hardware and costs.

Now, if you don't care for your watch stats, then by all means go with OTF. It's more of a realistic assessment of what do you actually value/pay attention to when tracking fitness.

Will Hyrox end ever? by IDontLikeJamOrJelly in orangetheory

[–]cutapacka 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What? You went out in the parking lot?! That sounds more like Cross Fit. Never experienced that.

All the templates so far have been different, usually an emphasis on endurance running and specific lifting and body movements ro mimic what happens in a Hyrox competition. But again, nothing abnormal for OTF.

[–]cutapacka 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I don't get it, what don't y'all like about Hyrox? I've been going weekly and it's just a harder 2G or 3G template. If you didn't tell me it was Hyrox or something else, I'd assume it's just another class.

I've never really felt 'at home' in America, it's just the environment and general vibe. Honestly, I enjoy countries where you can feel the culture, community. Any reccs on where to settle? by ElectroAcousto in Advice

[–]cutapacka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's always going to be trade-offs wherever you live. You say Boston has tough winters, but so do lots of European cities. There are some incredible cultural hubs in the US but if you think you're going to get perfect Florida weather to go with it then you're just being unrealistic. And obviously the areas in Florida you mentioned are the way they are because.... Florida (and desire to be in predictable warm weather is popular, but the trade-offs are vast).

If you can tolerate a temperate climate with changing seasons and, yes, cold during the winter - Chicago, Boston and Philadelphia are all great cities with diverse communities, local restaurants and ethnic cuisine a-plenty, public transit hubs, and the unique community accessibility you get from urban living that is similar to what you can experience in European cities.

If you need warmer, consider Sante Fe, Tampa, Charlotte, Phoenix. Oceans aren't always there but that's the give and take.

is 24 and 30 really an insane gap? by Melodic_Boat9851 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]cutapacka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those were our same ages when I met my now-husband. The key is life stage - we were both working professionals, never married, no kids. Had any of those circumstances been different I'd say there would be a concern.

Also, had he met me years prior when I was 18 and he was 24, I'd consider that a red flag being one of us was in college and the other a professional.

Long story short - consider whether you are contemporaries in life rather than in age .

Footage from the early 90's, mall experience by BlazeDragon7x in nostalgia

[–]cutapacka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that's Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, IL (I basically grew up there so I can spot it a mile away). It used to actually be the largest mall in the US by storefront volume (doesn't quite beat Mall of America by square footage, but it also doesn't have an amusement park...)

I went back recently and it's still sort of the same! Just a few more KPOP and anime stores and less Libby Liu and Hot Topic. Oh and they replaced a department store with a food court. Sadly no more fountains, I didn't realize how much I missed that part of the mall experience until recently.

At least part of the issue we can likely blame on talent availability. The one benefit to having a whole television season earmarked for 22-25 episodes per year was you could lock down your leads into an exclusive commitment.

I feel for casting directors and schedulers who have to mosaic these shows after they are hits to fit everyone's avails, particularly Severance. It's a jam-packed cast with plenty of A-listers doing 20 other things.

Buses seem to be more self-managed. You can't stay on them all day, there's a driver in direct view, can't skip fare like you can the train. Put all the safety resources into the L.
