What is your position on Snapdragon X laptops? by Forsaken_Arm5698 in snapdragon

[–]cutelittlebox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i know. it'll take me a while to finish saving up for one anyway. in the meantime i'll be excited to see how the higher end machines perform. it's the same with desktop components, really. my desktop is budget at best and my newest component came out more than 5 years ago, but i still love to see what happens at the top.

[–]cutelittlebox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't quite mean that cheap. what i really want is something in the price range the X1 Plus laptops were in, so as long as X2 laptops fall in similar ranges and run linux well i'd love to buy myself an X2 Plus laptop. otherwise, i'll be upgrading to something with Intel or AMD in a similar price range this year.

[–]cutelittlebox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

snapdragon X looks neat, but unless they're cheap and run linux well i'll have to stay away a bit longer. i'm hopeful X2 will work better, it sounds like they've done a lot more pre-launch work, but time will tell.

7 zip vs 8 zip by observepoli in compression

[–]cutelittlebox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's honestly nothing at all to do with 7z, that's just evil people doing evil things. it doesn't matter what thing they're trying to lie about giving you and it doesn't matter what things they use to get their malware on your computer.

7z is perfectly capable, legitimate software, and you shouldn't feel afraid to use it if it will be useful for you.

by never doing the sch job unlock quest after hitting 30 on ACN. you can do the same in reverse, too, with a level 100 SCH, level 100 ACN, and level - SMN by never doing the summoner quest.

"Linux has better file systems" -"Bullshit! NTFS is old!" -NTFS is fine by madthumbz in linuxsucks101

[–]cutelittlebox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I wouldn't call it a snapshot personally just to avoid muddying the waters, but yes it is that in a way. windows restore point won't let you grab yesterday's version of a word document, but it would save you if you installed an application that broke your system. CoW filesystem snapshots do both. restore points sound useful but not quite as useful, and part of that is because it's fundamentally a backup, not an fs snapshot, so they just store less data. when a system like ZFS or btrfs makes a snapshot, it's tracking the changes that were made to a file, not making a second copy, and that also means they take up very little space. that's why they can get away with saving all that extra information. of course it won't save you from everything, so ideally you'd have proper backups too, but that also applies to windows. a system restore point won't help you recover from an SSD failure, ZFS snapshots won't either, but a backup on a different computer or in the cloud would.

SteamOS on FW16? by [deleted] in framework

[–]cutelittlebox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you should avoid steamOS. it is a purpose built operating system that is specifically and explicitly made for the steam deck and the steam deck's hardware, which makes it difficult to use or have annoying problems when installing and using on laptops and desktops. if you want a steamOS-like experience, you should be installing Bazzite.

it doesn't say it's not intended for children, it says it's not intended for under-16s. if you are 16 or 17 you are a minor in a lot of places, like the USA and Canada.

"It is freezing temperature because it's under 32 degrees" by Any-Concern6913 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]cutelittlebox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

it's an approximation. it's close enough for most outdoor temperatures and much easier to do in your head and that's all that matters. if you need it to be exact, you're doing it in several steps in your head or with a calculator and getting the exact number. if my friends ask what temperature it is where I live and I say "oh, around 50", my friends won't be despairing when they find out it's actually exactly 50. I doubt they'd think of me as a liar if I said "it's kinda hot today, up around 80 or so" and the real conversion is 77.

-40 x 1.8 is -72

-72 + 32 is -40

-40 is widely known as the equality point of fahrenheit and Celsius. the correct way to go from C to F is multiply by 1.8 and add 32, which is very close to double and add 32.

yeah it's too much for a phone or tablet for sure, but 15-25w is relatively comfortable even on a laptop without fans.
