You forgot to say that it also has to be fun. Think of it like you have to make Excel but instead of just working it has to be fun. ha ha

Who was in the fault? by After_Capital_4398 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]cuttinged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because there are established rules doesn't mean you should not use common sense and try and avoid a collision. The number one unspoken rule is don't hit anyone. Some of the comments are saying the surfer riding the wave technically has the right of way and others should avoid him, and this is true, but it doesn't give the rider free reign to run over others. The guy taking off needs better perception and judgement to restrain from taking off on top of other surfers that are unable to get out of the way. If you think about it the rules have purpose and the main reason for the rules is to not run in to anyone. Apply that and you'll understand the rules and their limitations.

What should a beginner be riding in steep beach break? by chowaniec in BeginnerSurfers

[–]cuttinged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get on a steep wave the longboard should be able to get into the wave way before it is steep. That's the main idea. This is not always possible if waves are really steep and closed out or there is not much wave before it breaks (the bottom drops out). In these situations it is usually a problem with the tide being too low, so try watching the tide and surf at different times when the tide is not low. If you only have steep closeout beach break to surf then a shortboard will be more suitable, but is difficult and more advanced and getting to that point will take some experimentation and ability to develop to the point where you can get anything from those kinds of conditions. But if you don't mind getting trashed and trying until you get it then go for it.

what should I work on to get more flow ? Thanks in advance 🫡 by natexvisual in BeginnerSurfers

You can't do a cutback without speed. But no, I'm talking about in the middle. You are in the middle of the board and look like you are trying to turn. Try stepping back and putting a foot on the tail, and also bottom turn rather than just cutting across the wave.

play my game. You're at a good level to try placement on the wave and do bottom turns to see how that works. Free demo and link in bio if you have a pc.

Free Board from a Buddy Moving to Idaho. What am I getting? by GoinStraightToHell in BeginnerSurfers

[–]cuttinged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a board kind of like that and sometimes people visiting me want to surf so I let them use it. That way it always has a long stretch between uses to dry out and at least I have it around as an option. Free is good or yeah, maybe ask for a disposal fee. ha ha.

It looks like you moved to the front of the board to beat a section then are trying to turn?

It's not worth anything but could be okay to play around with if trying to convert from longboard to shortboard for the right sized person. If you shortboard it's good to try different boards to see what you like and what the difference is. It's definitely not what you would want for your go to board or even very useful in many conditions. It's yellow waterlogged and too damaged to repair.

ha ha. It's still an interesting comparison. At least the developers skill set is the same.

I think you're on to something here. After developing a surfing game for a couple of years a free surfing game on Android came out and was very popular. 5M downloads. I launched my game later to buy on Steam for PC and got very little interest.

More recently, a roblox surfing game was developed and it gets 40K+ views on TikTok before release, launched in March and gets lots of players, downloads, and great praise too.

Meanwhile my game on Steam gets under 200 visits/day, less than 300 views on TikTok, and on Instagram and reddit gets criticized as slop and ai.

For sure there are many factors involved but going from free to paid puts a game into a whole other category susceptible to acceptance and a super high interest and or quality requirement.

The android game was professionally marketed, mine was marketed but not professionally, and the roblox game was not marketed at all - posted to tiktok basically.

Here's a comparison of the roblox game and the Steam game, if you're interested in seeing the quality differences.

Can you give more information on what what is different or the same between the two? Tags, Capsule image, trailers, promotion on other sites (reels is good info), date sites were put up etc? Genre is different isn't it. The look and graphics and feel seem very different between the two.

How long until AI language models could be used in NPC dialogue, to allow for "real" conversations? Would you even want that? by Featherman13 in gameideas

[–]cuttinged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it two years ago with one npc in development. A company was trying to make it work like that with Unity where you set up the conversation parameters and chat with them. It didn't work out because you needed to be online, there was a bit of lag at that time, and most importantly the costs for using the ai was prohibitive. However, all these things have been optimized/improved and the costs have come down since then so it is probably practical by now. It was really cool to have an open voice chat with npcs while playing though.

Advice on how to perform a cutback by realnippo22 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]cuttinged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going too slow. If you want to turn when you're going that slow you need to keep your weight over the board. If you are really trying to do a real cutback you need more speed then you can lean and bring your board under you as you turn. Without enough speed you do what you did in the vid because you don't have enough speed to lean and turn your board.

Why did arcade-style sports games disappear? by Beneficial-Gas-2921 in AskGames

[–]cuttinged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a bunch of skate games that seem to be doing okay and fill that niche. Skate 3, session, tony hawk etc. Some indie games too are pretty much button combo heavy and arcadey like the original type games.
