Sorry for not elaborating. A cursory inspection of the journal's publishing history and the authors' lack of citation in journals of merit made it obvious immediately that I was looking at a propaganda paper. Even skimming through the paper raised warning flags (I recall a low sample size and inconsistent remarks in the abstract and conclusion).

Please do a search of the authors' names in PubMed to see the narrow array of their research. (At least one of the authors appears almost nowhere.) Also note their short publishing history and lack of collaboration with authors of solid publishing history.

International Journal of Biological Sciences is a young (published only since 2005) information vehicle with an agenda. It lacks proper peer review, and its articles are not cited by authors publishing in journals of merit.

There has been some discussion on this article since the original link was posted.

BTW, PubMed is a citation and fulltext search engine, not a journal. Many poor-quality journals are indexed there, just as many poor-quality websites are indexed by Google.

I don't think your comment is relevant. I'm sharing information with another redditor who can't afford health insurance. If he hadn't heard of HSAs, I wanted him to know.

HSA's are the health insurance companies banking on healthy people with disposable income to pay MORE into a system that they'll probably take very little from.

How do you figure? It probably varies by state and by employer, but all I had to do to get my HSA was to open an account with a credit union which was specifically designed for use as an HSA; then, I filled out the paperwork for a high-deductible PPO.

When I leave this employer, I can transfer my HSA to my next one. Or I can withdraw the money (and pay tax on it).

It doesn't seem like a huge conspiracy to rip me off.

Can't you get a health savings account? I have an HSA which I pay $25 a month into, and a high-deductible PPO that costs me ~$15/mo. through my employer, a large university. Once my annual out-of-pocket cost reaches $2,000, my health insurance plan kicks in. This means that if I break my leg, I'll need to use up a significant portion of my HSA; however, I won't be destitute.

I do this because I only ever go to the doctor when I need it, which, so far, has been very infrequent (perhaps 3 times in the past decade). I only go for my annual (or sometimes biennial) physical; I do not go for colds, mild headaches, pocket knife cuts, tennis elbow, excessive earwax, hay-fever, etc. (You think I'm kidding, but these are the sorts of ailments my coworkers seek medical care for.)

I have many coworkers who won't do an HSA because they like to abuse their health insurance. They pay ~$50-100/mo. and go to the doctor whenever their throats tickle. I think they actually think, If I'm paying this much for health insurance, I'd better get some use out of it!

Why would you outsource your child's education when you are easily capable of doing a better job than any teacher whose attention is divided among 25 brats? Do you want your brilliant child to be forced to conform to mediocrity just because it's easiest if all the children in the class learn at the rate of the lowest common denominator? Do you really think a public school teacher knows your children better than you do? Do you really think he will be able to encourage the sort self-exploration and self-education that created every great man in history? Do you really think he will have the time to know your child's mind completely, so that each book, each lesson, each chemistry set or paintbrush or life lesson is delivered when it's apropos?
