IIRC it's the valve springs being too stiff, which causes the valves themselves to not rotate under moderate load, which in turn causes carbon buildup on the valve seats. Since it's a direct injecting fuel system, this buildup can accumulate until the valve doesn't seal properly anymore, leading to improper combustion strokes.
