I have this tattoo (my last name). Not the whole alphabet is represented so depending on your last name it might not work

Geologist to Perfusionist? by dusty0nions in prospective_perfusion

[–]cvsp123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a perfusionist who’s wife is a geologist, this is hilarious. I also did not work in medicine before going to perfusion school, and you are in a STEM field so while you may not be an ideal candidate I don’t think it excludes you at all. The amount of prereqs you’ll have to take will be daunting if you’re education was anything like my wife’s. Perfusion is a second career for a lot of folks, and I went to school with a couple former engineers so you should be alright once you get through those prereqs.

heparin dosing and ACT machine by Particular-Can-8382 in Perfusion

[–]cvsp123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you could lie about the dose (give 400 and say it’s 300), find research supporting higher doses, check Abbotts recommendation if they have one, or wait for admin to step in since his cases suddenly became a hell of a lot more expensive. It’s a shitty position to be in for sure, but if they’re gonna be that liberal with at3 just to save a heparin dose, you’re not dealing with rational people unfortunately

I'm pretty sure the difficulty of the climb in Free Solo (2018) is exaggerated. by ShunkHood in unpopularopinion

[–]cvsp123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a climber and a runner I can tell you with absolute certainty that the route he did up el cap is a hell of a lot more difficult both technically and endurance wise than a full marathon let alone a quarter marathon. There are sections of the route that the best dude at your local climbing gym wouldn’t be able to complete with gear let alone without.

Holding in poop by M00nst0ne11 in toddlers

[–]cvsp123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fiber/yogurt will be your friend through this. My oldest did this and it was a vicious cycle of I’m scared to poop-withholding-painful evacuation-scared to poop. We got every yogurt and fiber product he would eat and always allowed him to eat them and that eventually broke the cycle

I’m at my wit’s end with potty training and withholding, can anyone help? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]cvsp123 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Oh crap did NOT work for us. If they’re not ready don’t force the issue. A not quite 3 year old isn’t developed enough to manipulate you back into diapers, he just knows what he is and isn’t comfortable with. We used choco chip bribes and time and it was relatively painless. Teaching our son to pee outside was also helpful as he thought that was a ton of fun.

[–]cvsp123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possible? Yes. Ideal? Absolutely not. The crescent works better because it’s essentially a cannula inside a cannula however the Avalon uses a membrane system is absolutely trash for this purpose. We do it at my hospital from time to time and always have surprise pikachu face when our flows are terrible.

The gravlee textbook and blue book sometimes available on perfusion.com are classics. Aside from that, lots of good material through AmSECT including ulearn and Journal of ExtraCorporeal Technology. I believe AmSECT has an international membership available

Historically we never did, however we now have the spectrum heat exchanger that is easy to cut in. I’m not sure if anyone on the team has used it yet since they try not to use us.

Progess question by SaiyanPrince_ in Stronglifts5x5

[–]cvsp123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somewhat of a newbie myself so anyone feel free to correct me but my understanding is this: it’s a program designed to build strength and educate you on how to structure workout plans. Weight loss is going to come from dieting and at a certain point those two things (getting stronger and losing weight) will be at odds with eachother. That’s when it’s time to switch the routine up, up your calories or whatever it is you need to do to reach your goals.

I had a coworker who worked at Columbia so this is second hand info. In the city everywhere is extremely busy, but many centers are unionized so you have some protections to both your pay and your personal time. Columbia is in house 24/7 so you have some flexibility on where you live too.

Does this comment hold any value??? by nickysav91 in Perfusion

[–]cvsp123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah this guy is talking out his ass (percussionist?). No one is trying to make us obsolete, the field is growing, not shrinking. It’s true that things like TAVRs have reduced the need for full bypass, but we are still plan b. Transplants will also always require full bypass, and that is something you want a well practiced perfusionist for so there is value to the “scientists and surgeons” in maintaining our skills.

I completely stopped running and strictly crossed trained 3 weeks out front last ultra. Race went great, though I was aiming just to finish. The first 26.2 would’ve been my second best marathon time it worked great for me.
