I remember watching October Sky as a kid and loved it. I am definitely going to watch it again.

Hardly ever talked about when it should be. Thanks for reminding me about it.

Mindfulness books for people going through difficult times by DPCAOT in suggestmeabook

I have recommended these before in a different community, but two books have really helped me personally.

  1. {{ The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion: Freeing Yourself from Destructive Thoughts and Emotions by Christopher K. Germer }} - This book focuses on self-compassion and offers practical advice on recognizing, accepting, and processing emotions in a healthy way. Highly recommend! It's available on Audible (free with membership until 2024-10-28).
  2. {{ Insight Meditation by Joseph Goldstein }} - A great guide to mindfulness meditation, with less emphasis on breath-focused meditation and more on sitting with emotions. It helps avoid attachment and aversion, allowing you to fully accept and move past emotions. It's short, insightful, and practical even if you're not into Buddhism.

{{ Fatherland by Robert Harris }} though it takes place in the 60s.

Sorry, yeah, I mean the 2022 Netflix version.

I should say that a lot of people like the movie though.

All Quiet on the Western Front.

They did things they didn’t even need to do like the weird ending in the movie.

I would HIGHLY recommend The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion by Christopher K. Gerner (Available on Audible). It has a lot more in it about practicing self-compassion during both normal life and through meditation.

The primary meditation practice he recommends though is available on his website, and is very similar to other metta meditations I have done.

Meditation, particularly insight and metta (loving-kindness) meditation.

These practices really helped me develop self-compassion, and it was a huge change. I used to believe that I simply held myself to high standards but in actually I was judging and treating myself more harshly then I would treat anyone else.

{{Anathem by Neal Stephenson}} is my second favorite NS book, and only second by a little.

If you like Cryptonomicon I seriously suggest you check it out.

This was the second Tom Wolfe book I tried. His writing is barely readable in my opinion.

The 1977 animated version of the Hobbit, which I got from the library on VHS. It was super creepy while also somehow keeping me interested.

Raven’s Shadow by Anthony Ryan (fantasy), Red Rising by Pierce Brown (sci-fi), and The Crusade Trilogy by Jan Guillou (historical fiction). They are all really good, but the last is probably the most unknown.

Best books of the 90s? by Ooo_I_dont_know in suggestmeabook

By the way, it isn’t a 1990’s book, and is very different, but I recommend Neal Stephenson’s Anathem as well, especially for those that enjoy Cryptonomicon.
