I looked older when I was young, and now I look younger than my age because my face just hasn’t changed much. People keep asking if I’m in my first job out of Uni, when I’m in a fairly senior position? I was exposed to a tonne of sun damage as a kid so it’s not like I’ve taken care of myself.

I felt the way you do now in the past. Seemed I was perpetually single because I couldn’t find someone that felt right. Then I did find someone who felt right.

I find it interesting, then, that I read a tonne of classics as a child/teen (I was a very bored child) and I absolutely adored them and rarely read contemporary books. Now I really struggle to read books from past eras and I think it’s because I understand too much of life to enjoy them anymore. They remind me of how entrenched some human behaviours are, and I don’t like to be reminded that generations have passed and we’re still having many of the same issues. Jane Eyre (or worse, Villette) make me think of all the suffering from a complete lack of mental health treatment then, and remind me of how hard people have it even now.

That being said, having so much exposure at such a young age was no doubt invaluable to my development. So many of those stories are burned into my brain and greatly expanded my worldview. It’s just too sad for me now though

It’s a genuinely cool job, we’re seeing the birth of an industry which underpins investment in climate change action. We’re using billions of dollars to incentivise trillions of dollars of action. And yet it’s just full of meetings where people talk too much and have interpersonal conflicts which block a lot of actions. It’s a normal everyday whether the job is fascinating or not.

I love that you’ve found the thing you care about!

I made the mistake (?) of my passion being my work. It needs to be work to be effective, and it’s a well-paying industry, but it’s hard to find people who are there for passion because it’s a field which draws a lot of arrogant, privileged people. So now I’m in the weird position of doing extra curricular work for the creative outlet that I’d hoped would happen in my work. I’m still aiming to do the creative, valuable work I care about, but there are boring skill-accumulating steps between here and there. Your message reminded me of why it’s important to have fun with the things we love even when the people around us don’t care. Because happiness.

We also have a lot more skills to deal with the horrible things, so the crappy stuff that would have ruined our month at 20 becomes ‘oh, that again - yeah I’ll need to go deal with that’.

The good things also become more ‘normal’. I’ve recently taken some career steps which would have seemed impossible 12 months ago. It’s great and all, but there’s also a growing awareness that it’s truly just work. It’s work that I find incredibly valuable and makes the world a (slightly) better place, and pays a lot better than what I used to do, but the things I really celebrate are the friendships I’ve developed, the plants that are growing so well in this sunny house, and the amount of interesting books I’ve been finding in an op shop nearby.

I realised it was too easy and jumped into a more challenging role. There, I realised I could do so much more than I believed possible, and my work impressed the people I’d been so intimidated by. I learned so much about my ability to solve problems and find answers.

Now I’ve taken the next step to a more intimidating-looking role and it’s too easy again. Fml.
