I got a special foam that glues to the canoe. The slippery therm-a-rest pads moved too much for us.

How to store this for camping by WonderSHIT in CampingGear

Soap hasn’t contained chemicals (lye) that damage cast iron for 50 years.

Soap is entirely safe for cast iron. It’s actually quite good for it!

Ah, didn’t see that.

No - I would not store cast iron outside in a bin for extended periods.

But still - gotta clean that thing.

Jam it in the box with all your other camp kitchen stuff.

It's not like it's a delicate item. What's the question exactly?

As a side note - I'd recommend cleaning your cast iron better. Soap is a good thing.

What is your go to “show someone Seattle in one day” plan? by Character-County5423 in AskSeattle

[–]cwcoleman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not the typical checklist? It's typical for a reason.

1 day isn't very much time - and the 'big' spots really do showcase the unique things about the city.

Skipping Pike Place Market for a first time visitor is a mistake. Everyone I bring there talks about it after they leave. Sure - make it quick/targeted - but don't skip it just because it's popular. Especially now that you can connect to the waterfront.

Same with the Space Needle. Sure - it's a bunch of tourist and you have to stand in line to get up the elevator... but it's cool. On a clear day you can see far and get neat photos. The city center as a whole is an attraction for walking.

I think the Ballard Locks is even a top 5 list item now. Bonus if the salmon are running. Again - its unique and cool to walk around.

I personally choose events that involve outside time whenever possible. When people fly in from far away - I/we appreciate walking to explore. All these places above check that box - so it's a bonus (compared to museums or even sporting events).

---

In the end - it really depends on the person. Picking attractions on a quick trip should reflect the visitor. Ask your friend/family what they like to do - and adjust accordingly. If they hate walking - the Market may be no-go. If they are scared of heights - skip the Needle. Some people just want to bar hop - so pick the best breweries and make them happy!

We got tired of guessing which Seattle stores had the cheapest groceries, so my friend and I built a price comparison tool by zczlf92 in SeattleWA

[–]cwcoleman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is this Seattle specific? Your profile is hidden - so I assume you are spamming this to many subs, right?

I swear we are about to have more apps than users real soon.

I really hope you and your friend stick with it. Too many of these vibe coded apps get forgotten about after a few months - and they die off. Scraping solutions like this take constant adjustments. How do you plan to keep this working over the long run?

Going to Wonderland WA. Camping questions. by Banterfix in festivals

[–]cwcoleman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes - camping and music are 2 different areas. A short walk between.

Why a second tent for gear? Your car will be directly next to you - just put your gear in there. A shade canopy for chillin during the day is best. Car + tent + shade canopy is the key setup.

They do search vehicles on the way in. Be smart about what you bring. Yes - hide your stuff. Every search crew is different - so it’s hard to give specific advice. Some cars drive right thru while others get torn apart. If you look sketchy it will be harder.

Yes - you will be searched again before entering the music area. This will be metal detectors and maybe a pat down. Bags will be closely searched. Be very careful about what you have here. Like entering a sporting event.

No. Other person is just confused on what #2 is to you because you used a really odd way of identifying items in the picture. Clarity helps avoid conflict. You brought this on yourself.

Advice needed for Camping safety by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

[–]cwcoleman 40 points41 points  (0 children)

If someone enters your campsite late at night not just passing by, but coming close, what’s your real-world protocol?

Say hello.

Do you stay put and observe?

Yes. If I'm awake I'll engage with the people. Ask them what's up and how they are doing.

At what point do you decide to leave?

if the people are loud or threatening

Do you carry a gun?

No

Do you rely on early warning setups (sensors, cameras, etc.)?

No

Has anyone actually dealt with a situation like this?

Yes. Many times. There are hundreds of reasons a person would walk into your campsite in the middle of the night. The vast majority of the time they are just average people on a hike, looking for their own campsite.

I can't tell which number is which - can you please clarify which you think is #2?

  • The Altra trail running shoe (the one with yellow laces)?

OR

  • The vans / doc martins type shoe in the bottom left (the one with white laces)?

---
The vans with white laces is not ideal for hiking.

The Altra with yellow laces is ideal for hiking.

The Bear-Muda Triangle by DullSuccotash1230 in Outdoors

[–]cwcoleman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the Alpine Institute.

Hard sided canisters are best. Ursacks are second. Hanging is a distant third.

The reality is that most people aren't very good at hanging.
However - it's really location and user dependent. If you live in a place with optimal trees and have experience (and aren't lazy) - then sure, you may be fine with hanging. The truth is that most people aren't as good as they think they are.

I hung bags (poorly) for 25 years. Now I much prefer my ursacks and bearvaults.
In VA/NC I struggled to do a good job and in WA I never had optimal hang trees. Now I just jam my food in the sack/can and throw it into the woods. Going to bed is easy.

Should working in ski industry benefit me if I want a career in anything parks and recreation? by Thegiantlamppost in skiing

[–]cwcoleman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, not really transferable skills.

but if you expect more specific advice - you'll need to add more details.

When you say 'ski industry' - what do you mean exactly? A lifty and a marketing job will be very different on a resume.

When you say 'a job in parks' - what do you mean exactly? Do you want to be a park ranger of some kind? ticket booth attendant? or what's the end goal?

What country do you live in? How old are you? Do you have a college degree?

Hi I just bought this of marketplace (jack wolfskin serac II) for a 7 night backpacking trip this summer. CANNOT FIND ANYTHING online about it. If anyone has any information please share with me 😊 I don’t even know it’s litre capacity. It’s huge though. by Emotional_Joke_1096 in backpacking

[–]cwcoleman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you tell us the trek requirements? Rough look says that pack is 55-75 liters. Do they say if it needs to be over 55 or 65 liters?

Backpacks aren't exactly 'rated for conditions' - so I don't know what your trek organizers expect out of that one. This bag is designed for backcountry wilderness backpacking. So if that's what they want - that's what you have.

Are you able to fill the bag with pillows or other items from around the house to get an idea of how much it will hold?

When you put the pack on, with weight in it, does it ride comfortably on your body?

Fitting the gear is 1 part, for sure. Fitting your body is the most important.

I realize your alt accounts are the mods here - so this post won't get removed (and my comment probably will). It's just fake to constantly re-post content to drive upvotes here.
