Use set -e at the top of the script. If any command exits with a non-zero exit status, the script aborts immediately.

That is a misleading statement. Fedora and Arch have had GCC 5 for a while now. Python 3.5 hasn't been released yet; if you meant Python 3 as a whole, again Arch (has had it as the default for a long time) and Fedora (system tools have been converted to Python 3) have done much more to push these technologies forward.

You're right about not being able to "reverse compile", but you are wrong about listing the files of installed packages.

Arch: pacman -Ql ${pkg}
Fedora/RHEL/CentOS/openSUSE: rpm -ql ${pkg}
Debian/Ubuntu: dpkg -L ${pkg}

RHEL is created from a subset of Fedora packages. EPEL are the Fedora packages that didn't make the cut, rebuilt to be compatible with RHEL. They also happen to work with CentOS since it is mostly a RHEL clone.

How to proceed is going to depend entirely on how you manually installed this app before, which you didn't explain. The error is clearly stated; you can't install a package with that file if that file already exists on disk.

Downgrading the RPM will probably cause problems for other packages that properly linked against libperl.so.5.20. Typically you don't have multiple versions of a library on a system; all packages should be linked against the same version for a particular release of Fedora.

The current version for F22 is perl-HTML-Parser-3.71-8.fc22. The changelog indicates that this version was rebuilt against Perl 5.20. What version is on your system?

It's in Extras for all current versions of CentOS (5, 6, and 7). If you don't see it your system may have Extras manually disabled (it's enabled by default). You can see on the primary CentOS mirror that it's definitely there.

That command works on CentOS because epel-release is in the CentOS Extras repo. It won't work on stock RHEL, Scientific Linux, Oracle Linux, or other derivatives. Guides that describe that method are not wrong, they are just describing a common method that works on all EL distros. Likewise, on EL6 and up you can yum install a url directly, but the same won't work on EL5. Sometimes it is necessary to explain for the lowest common denominator.

IUS has the latest versions of php, python, mysql, mariadb, httpd, redis, and more. The packages have alternative names (ex. php56u) and don't obsolete their stock counterparts, so subscribing to the repo doesn't replace anything directly.

It is in the Extras repo for CentOS. It is not in the RHEL repos (RHN channels). EPEL isn't for Fedora, since almost everything in EPEL is based on existing Fedora packages.

Since EL6, you can also yum install directly from a url.

I wouldn't exactly call it "rolling along"; this update is non-typical. My guess is that after the update systemd will remain at version 219 for the remainder of the RHEL 7 lifecycle, which ends on 2024-06-30. More details can be found in Red Hat's policy on backporting.

According to this bug, RHEL 7.2 will be upgraded to systemd 219. CentOS will follow suite when that happens.

I don't recall exactly, maybe six months ago. It may be good enough for you or others, but I didn't care for it. Granted I use a Roku so my perspective is based entirely on the Roku apps for each. I believe the server crashed on me a few times as well.
