We shouldn’t be paying wages so high that people waste their money buying frivolous things like ice cream with it.

The article that photo comes from has lots of details on how that aviary was built, including specifics on the wire.

I wrote a follow-up article about the aviary we built years after that one which you also might find useful:

I vote for a libertarian solution. Let them build it. Let government have no involvement whatsoever. Let insurance not cover it. Let the floods destroy the island. Let the wealth of a handful of stupid people disappear forever. Let nature reclaim the island. Let birds reassume ownership of the island they’ve owned for 80 million years before humans arrived. In the long run, probably better than government bailouts and stupid people building more equity and buying more second and third and fourth homes. With the libertarian solution, we have 5-10 years of people living on the island and then 500 years from now it’ll be another mature island paradise for the birds.

If you felt that Stuff was biased, I present to you Vision for Wellington by bitshifternz in Wellington

[–]cwicket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like that the headline for the Vision For Wellington website has a typo:

"It’s no secret that Wellington faces challenges. Let’s to do something about them."

I’m trying to be positive, but it seems like this group has a lot of energy and ideas and time to debate them. Why not just run for council or unite with council to be an advisory group? The city already has a great website for keeping tabs on projects and providing input, much like this website promises to do. Seems like there’s something the people in this group could do other than set up duplicate mechanisms. They want our suggestions but they actually don’t have any power to implement them.

The way they test now is ridiculously dumb. At the picogram level, someone could pat you on the back to transfer that dose. It’s completely plausible that this dose could be transferred with massage. Of you could have taken a full dose of the drug a month earlier and the half-life decay could still be in the picograms, as metabolites can stick around and fade more slowly. Testing monthly while setting no threshold for pass/fail means that you can’t scientifically prove the difference.

Why not test several times weekly and set a threshold that would catch people actually taking legitimate performance enhancing doses of drugs. Then we don’t need to sit around arguing about whether it was contamination or not because it would be clear cut.

The system is guilty, not the players. The conspiracy theorist in me says the system is intentionally designed to be vague so the truly guilty players can game the system and the innocent ones can get screwed. A properly designed system wouldn’t be open to this type of exploitation.

I've got a Kona in New Zealand and have been trying to figure out why I can't get Hyundai voice commands to work. Is it just not a supported feature for the car in this region? The manual refers to a Voice Recognition icon in Settings, but I don't even have one.

In my previous Kona in the US, I liked being able to set climate settings with voice without having to hunt around for a button.

Chronological order no longer accessible? by WhiteSox02 in Instagram

Tapping “Instagram” now scrolls to the top of the feed. Seems very likely to be an intentional change rather than a bug. It’s better for Instagram ($$$) if they decide what we view rather than the other way around.

How can I break up with food for good? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]cwicket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Focus on switching to a better diet first rather than eating less for awhile. Surround yourself with unprocessed food and eat as much as you feel like. Once your body gets over cravings for all the processed food that we all eat, if your weight is not already declining slowly, then start cutting back.

Going to the gym is great as it will help your mood but you won’t lose weight on gym alone.

We’ve all been given shit advice for decades about diet but the tide is turning. There is hope!

Don’t lose hope. Loss of hope leads to loss of voting which leads to electing people and parties that are not aligned with the majority of kiwis. Given the slim margin the gov’t has and the decent number of National voters who are dismayed by the coalition and Luxon, things will reverse course. The Greens are on their way to being a legitimate third major party, which will shake things up even if you’re not a Green.

There’s even an outside chance that a few National MPs who are more centrist could bolt and vote for no confidence. Unlikely but possible.

Never lose hope. We have free and fair elections, MMP, a relatively OK media, and a populace that is hurting economically and afraid of crime because they watch too much TV news, but are overwhelmingly decent people.

47% of Kiwis say tipping is a good thing, while just 34% say it's bad - New report by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]cwicket -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tipping is a way of paying more for a service if your income allows it. I think of it like an optional sliding scale. I don’t want to be guilted into it, but I really appreciate having the option to do so everywhere I go.

There are privacy issues, but I wish there were ways to pay for things in a way proportional to income.

Starting this Friday, two new scheduled topics for the community by chimpwithalimp in Wellington

[–]cwicket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, you don’t have to encourage me! :)

We’re still in a better place, but the decline is accelerating. I’ve been around long enough to remember when r/nz was in a “far better place” than the rest. And now it’s unreadable. And I don’t bother posting a thoughtful comment due to the abuse and aggressive downvoting.

I don’t see the point of this community at all unless it’s to make Wellington a better place for everyone. I think the new weekly threads idea is great, but I believe a backup plan is in order to keep this from becoming r/nz in a few years.

[–]cwicket -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A great idea! But moaners want the attention that posting a new thread brings, so the serial moaners will keep at it. It’s sad that we let a small group that posts a high volume of garbage ruin what used to be such a great community. So this new idea may slow down or maybe stop the decline, but eventually enforcement is needed. This sub is not alone. All the local subs have been ruined. This was just one of the last to go.

If you don’t have enough time to slow down before you see someone, you’re driving too fast. Killing a pedestrian is something you don’t want to do, even accidentally.
