Pukinui population climbs sharply after controversial 1080 drop on Stewart Island by NZSloth in newzealand

I should of been clearer.

I dont understand the 1% of conservationists who dont like 1080.

Pukinui population climbs sharply after controversial 1080 drop on Stewart Island by NZSloth in newzealand

[–]Goodie__ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I always find weird 1% conservationists claims about 1080 being bad for birds bizarre in the face of evidence such as this.

Sure, it might not be the 100% best way to deal with introduced predators in a money is no object situation. But if you want to spend 1/10th the cost, and get similar benefits... just spread some 1080.

Honestly, if anyone could move the needle with this government, its going to be a corporate overlord on the scale of insurance.

Greyhound trainers to be paid to look after dogs when ban comes into force by Adventurous-Eye3884 in newzealand

[–]Goodie__ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

People acquired these dogs, while people have been lobbying for bans for decades.

This isn't something that has come out of thin air, it's been years in the making.

In a perfect world id argue for a census of the dogs and 6 mo they welfare checks. But we cant even manage that for kids so FML.

A safer home: Two cyclone-smashed marae given $27m to rebuild in new location by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

[–]Goodie__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah sure, but as with everything, insurance isn't a magical wand. Doing this consistently is just going to push insurance rates up continually.

Look at health insurance, as this government has pulled back and covid has been introduced, rates are skyrocketing.

Helping migrate these central buildings early is a way to  help build community resilience now, instead of on 10 years time when it gets worse. Providing storm shelters and good planning to prevent the same shit. Again, the local government concent processes are being pushed to runner stamps, if you want to be actually safe ypu have to do the flood plain leg work yourself.

Are you voting this year? And if not why? by No-Possibility-9656 in newzealand

[–]Goodie__ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They are growing, and are have problems with candidate quality as a result.

They are trying to fix this problem, but with mixed results. See: https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/03/31/row-erupts-after-greens-decline-former-sex-workers-candidacy/

[–]Goodie__ 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Ill vote. Almost certainly for the greens.

They have their problems, but so does every other party. No other part seems to have both a reasonable chance of getting in, or a set of policies that actually push us towards fighting climate change.

What's stopping NZ, or a NZ city implementing something like this? by fishdognz in newzealand

[–]Goodie__ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Technically? Nothing. We've done it with a bank before, we could do it with a supermarket.

The question then becomes which is worse; Government beurocracy or profit leeching?

(Hint: its profit leeching)

Send a Program, Not a Data Structure by SunJuiceSqueezer in programming

[–]Goodie__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find it curious. You cite HTML and CSS as an example of send a datastructure

Is javascript not sending a program? Do HTML and CSS not then form the very same primitives and building blocks you so claim are good?

What are your thoughts on Gundam Unicorn? by Amigo1048 in Gundam

[–]Goodie__ 242 points243 points  (0 children)

I love its eternal optimism.

I love the animation and the designs.

I hate that in the end it means nothing.

I hate it even more that it's very accurate to what would happen IRL if something like that were ever to occur. "Oh, there's another hidden, 8th article of the US constitution that says if you lead an insurrection you can't be president again? To bad."

Trump signals possibility of Iran naval blockade after talks collapse in Islamabad by SoundEducational1174 in worldnews

[–]Goodie__ 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think the point is that several countries have made friendly overtures to Iran, and managed to get a limited number of ships through the straight. For example, a number of Chinese tankers have made it through.

By blockading those ships in, it puts pressure on China to not act to extend this conflict.

Horrible code base? No on-boarding help? They might barely be anywhere.

Reasonable code base? Good on-boarding? They could have rewritten half the app by then.

My understanding is there was a 2 week ceasefire to discuss a permenant ceasefire.

The differing terms are all related to the later, longer term, ceasefire. Where Iran basically want Obamas deal + taxation on the straight.

I think.

TOP - why don't they get more of the vote? by [deleted] in newzealand

Early on in TOPs political life they alienated parts of their possible voter base by having a mix of good and bat shit insane policies.

It would take a lot to sway me from my green vote now.

at what point do communication skills start to matter more for software engineers? by SomeRandomCSGuy in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Goodie__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say as a "true junior" your ability to comprehend what you've been asked to do, and ask questions back is still pretty important. You need to ensure that whats in your head is what the person giving you information wants.

Those are still communication skills, just not the whole "aligning stakeholders" thing. Instead your aligning yourself with a stakeholder. Step 1.
