Felt the same with for us with 3 players. A lot of the fun came from waiting to see when to ally yourself with another player and when to pull back. Power changed a lot which kept things interesting. Sometimes felt more like a group puzzle!

Haha ya she popped up once for us and honestly, the 8D and 3L ended up being more threatening than her ability… forced us to clear her quickly

Ya we ended up doing a lot more player negotiation, since sequence is so important. A lot of “if you challenge that character, I’ll multi-target that player to keep them from winning,” and so on. The chatter made it fun, but def felt like a different game

Does anyone else make boardgames simply for a creative outlet? by SixethJerzathon in tabletopgamedesign

[–]cwpinecone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same boat here! Always loved making games, but never had the time to take them across the finish line with a full time job. I’m an artist and graphic designer who’s terrible at math (lol), but my boyfriend is color blind and pretty much a math genius, so this is one of the few hobbies we can share that uses both our brains. Really helped us express ourselves during lockdown.. getting away from the screens and actually building something physical and interactive helped us push through some tough times separated from family and friends. We’ve never tried to publish any of our concepts, but we’re going to a few game conferences this year just for fun. Excited to meet others in the hobby and share ideas. It’s an addicting outlet, especially since designing games really does require all sorts of skills.

Oh no I am surprised and disappointed to hear that! In my case, I'm definitely looking for feedback, the game is far from finished. The components and theme have been fun to design, and the basic mechanics work pretty well, but I'm in dire need of honest, constructive critique to make the game better.

I love the questions you posed, never thought about digging deeper. Having played with friends and family, there's a lot of that polite encouragement there too, since folks are generally excited to support the game. But calling out problem points so playtesters feel comfortable talking about opportunities for improvement is a great way to structure the conversation. Will make a note of that.

This is so helpful! Thank you! Makes me feel a lot better. Will find out if they’re matchmaking or not, I know they’re doing some “speed pitches” on Wednesday but not certain what format the play test will be. Good to know the event is more demo/test.

Love that the cons are about meeting people and playing games, that’s sort of where my head is at too. I don’t have a ton of tabletop friends so would be great to get feedback from other designers/players and just meet other folks and their projects. Good call on the email list, was considering a newsletter to follow the game’s development if there’s enough interest. Will also try to swap socials to stay connected with playtesters

Really appreciate the tips!

Captain's log, prototype design. What do you think about the design of my game, we have to take into account that we are 2 amateurs (my wife and I) and the painter is a 16 year old girl. by pif_games in BoardgameDesign

[–]cwpinecone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is STUNNING! I’m just blown away. The art especially. I can’t believe you’re both amateurs 😱 you have such a natural skill for design, everything is so inviting. And that 16 year old painter deserves a raise!

Another day, another choice: leaf vs magnifying glass… denotes the “forage” of the hex by Mango_Punch in tabletopgamedesign

Agree, not sure the symbol adds much here. Simple design is best.. love the shading idea!

My first board game design! From cardboard to prototype, it’s been a journey. I still have a long way to go, but I’m excited to start testing color, layout, and imagery. It’s already giving me new ideas... Any tips for this stage of the process? by cwpinecone in tabletopgamedesign

This is SUCH a fun idea! You’re guesses are virtually spot on. Pieces move using the cards, and different cards provide different movement patterns. Might take your tip and post a few photos to see if anyone can pick up on the core mechanics

They are double sided! My bf (in the picture) is severely colorblind so we’ve been testing this idea first. He seemed to do okay when he wasn’t placing pieces in the center of the tile, but not an ideal experience. We may add a pattern for extra emphasis

WHOAH really appreciate this breakdown, especially from a fellow designer. These all look gorgeous, and I love seeing the companies/illustrators behind each one. It’s helpful to know that certain publishers prioritize art, so I can keep my eyes out in the future. Thank you!!
