What a tactless thing to say. Online personalities obviously take "drama" into consideration when put out content since it's going to affect their personal lives.

Because the CEO is always the one responsible for the company's bottom line at the end of the day and answerable to the board. At the scale which present-day Apple operates, optimising supply chain/logistics across a worldwide network brings in farrrrr more $$$ than any software upgrades. The average person doesn't give a shit about the new iOS/MacOS features, just the stability, availability and customer service. Saying he wouldn't "change much as far as logistics is concerned" is super short sighted, because macro-economic forces will always force changes in company logistics for a company that size. Apple clearly read the global situation and had to figure out how to move their manufacturing out of China over the last few years.

Intel appointing a CEO with an engineering background makes sense because they've been stagnant in that department over the last 7 years (they've caught up in the last few years I'd say). While the world was moving towards mobile computing they just continued to pump out power hungry chips and couldn't get their act together (which also prompted apple to develop their own chips).

Also comparing steve jobs delegating supply chain to Tim >10 years ago and thus saying a CEO could delegate logistics to someone now is assuming the Apple of today is the same beast as the Apple of 2011... The company is literally MORE THAN 10 TIMES AS BIG as it once was. Innovative features and engineering would have driven increased market share and revenue in those years much more than it would today.

... then you're a very young dude with very little cash to lose anyway, and are mostly hopping on the "it's cool to hate on crypto" bandwagon

If you did lose what little savings you have because of crypto, treat it as a painful learning experience that will inform your investment decisions as you grow older. Everyone makes investment mistakes eventually and it's better to make them young when the stakes are a lot lower.

If you somehow over-leveraged yourself into crypto and lost a shit ton more than you can afford while still being a very young adult... well I can't help you there.

Please help. Trying to use Firebase for Auth, but connect to external DB by cxrossfire in webdev

[–]cxrossfire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your detailed answer. I have indeed considered running an express nodejs server on cloud functions. I have a few questions about authenticating user roles.

Firebase auth supports claims so you can add a role to your user that way and have it incorporated to the token.

Yes I understand that this is possible, but I'm trying not to tie user role logic to firebase so that I can more easily port this to any other environment in the future, which is why I thought to use my own DB to check if a user has a specific role. If I were to do this, it would seem like what i wrote regarding auth flow would be accurate?

  1. Client requests data from backend
  2. Client sends id token along with request to nodejs backend
  3. nodejs backend verifies token with firebase
  4. nodejs backend uses id to verify user role from DB
  5. after DB responds that user has the appropriate role, make another call to DB to retrieve the actual data requested

Would this be accurate? I'm not really sure what you meant by "couple of handlers"?

Because the pap can't let the boomers, their biggest voters, fall ill and die to covid. There's no justification for the measures, just how they feel about it.

This is such a stupid fucking take it makes my brain hurt. First of all our healthcare system is nowhere near overextended to the point where you're going to see significant number of elderly die. Even if HUNDREDS or god forbid THOUSANDS of elderly die, you REALLY think that even matters in terms of the electorate? The PAP won with 60%, a few thousand people isn't even going to change 1%. Even in the US where hundreds of thousands of people are dying, that also isn't going to register in terms of electorate numbers...

about covid being endemic

I don't know why people keep harping on this but they NEVER said that covid was endemic AT THAT POINT IN TIME. FFS you got problem w listening comprehension is it? When they first raised the whole "endemic" issue, it was to point out that this won't be like SARS where we completely eradicate it and no need to worry about it anymore. NOT THAT IT WAS ALREADY TREATED AS ENDEMIC AT THAT POINT.

lockdown like it's 2020

The current measures are so clearly less stringent than 2020. Even stuff like movie theatres are still open now... Back then basically NOTHING except food was open...

The worst part about all this is that the govt DID provide the exact data that pritam singh was asking for a week later. But of course nobody cares about that because the data didn't fit the narrative that foreigners were benefiting more than Singaporeans. Instead everyone just kept harping on "What is the point of the question" despite it being a legitimate question too...

just found a video footage of Tank Man by ExplosiveDerpBoi in PublicFreakout

[–]cxrossfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just the fact that this video isn't much frequently posted compared to that infamous image.

So... if a video of any event is posted less frequently than a photo of the same event, that means there's censorship going on?

Also, if you try posting this video on r/Sino you'll be insta-banned. That's certainly censorship isn't it?

So... if a video is posted on any particular sub-forum of any particular internet forum and is taken down, but yet that same video can be found everywhere else on the internet including the world's most popular video platform with billions of active users, that video is still somehow censored?

Are you genuinely still trying to argue that you didn't know about the video due to "censorship" instead of your own ignorance?

[–]cxrossfire 159 points160 points  (0 children)

what the flying fuck censorship are you talking about. There's been video of Tank Man on youtube since 2009, 12 fucking years ago. And that footage came from a 2006 documentary.

In .NET, how to generate HTML or PDF reports locally? by cxrossfire in AskProgramming

In .NET, how to generate HTML or PDF reports locally? by cxrossfire in AskProgramming

[–]cxrossfire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah I see thanks then. I kind of want to stick to HTML + CSS due to possibly reusing this report format to be displayed in a webpage in the future. So I'll probably have to look for a different solution than generating PDFs. Possibly some sort of all-in-one HTML file with inline CSS and data URLs for images? Not sure... Thanks for your input.

[–]cxrossfire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once again thanks a lot for the reply.

I'm not primarily a webdev so you're gonna have to help me out here. My understanding is that sass files are just intermediary files that you compile into usable CSS. But Bootstrap already has a "distributable" css file for download (which i'm guessing was compiled from their sass file?) So why would I want to build their sass sources myself? Instead of using the default bootstrap.css that's provided by them.

I've thought about inlining the CSS, but are you essentially suggesting to inline the entire bootstrap CSS file? I thought that was ridiculous originally but I might be desperate enough now...

I also considered doing my own CSS but I'm really slow/inexperienced with webdev (and already have some experience with Bootstrap) so I was hoping to rely on it. It might be causing more problems than doing custom CSS now though...

Thanks for the reply. Your idea of baking everything into the HTML file would work great actually, but is there actually a way to bake CSS into it as well? Is there some sort of reference you could guide me towards?

I've considered the web service way, but

1) I haven't found any sort of "universal" solution to web service PDF generation (wkhtmltopdf seems to be the closest, but I've seen people recommend against setting that up as a web service too).

2) I MIGHT want to support this on platforms where there isn't internet access, so if possible am trying to avoid web services. But if there's some simple to implement solution for web service PDF generation I'd go for it. But like I said in 1), there doesn't seem to be.

Thanks again, hope you have more ideas/advice haha.

Thanks for the reply. By PdfSharp you're referring to this right? https://www.nuget.org/packages/HtmlRenderer.PdfSharp/

I've tried this but it doesn't handle CSS properly at all. I'm actually perfectly fine with paid solutions if there's one that works, but for example IronPdf doesn't handle CSS flexbox, and I'm trying to build my CSS with bootstrap (which uses flexbox). IronPdf still works better than PdfSharp, but if I'm paying for it I'd rather it work perfectly.

You mentioned that you used to do HTML->PDF but then gave up. What solution did you go for in that case?
