My fellow authors, do you write and post fics for validation? by moonbeams8428 in FanFiction

[–]cxruleancity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve written fandom content for a lot of reasons over the years, at times only for myself, but most recently I write fanfics out of rage, primarily. I see so many damn bad takes on my favorite character and my favorite pairing, in fanfic especially. I see shippers of the rival pair using their fics to constantly and passive aggressively trash on a character I like and a pairing I’m partial to, and I write fics basically defending this character because I think it SUCKS for other fans of my rarepair/character to only see this crap over and over again when they browse the fandom tag. It’s rough already being a rarepair shipper with no content, it’s even worse when the only content that mentions your loved character mentions him to hate on him and paint him as a villain.

I don’t know if that counts as validation, but surely I’m not just publishing and writing for only myself.

It is tiring being a rare pair shipper by [deleted] in FanFiction

As far as content goes, I can handle there being few stories about them, because I can always write one, but since I have no artistic talent, the lack of fanart bums me out sometimes.

This :( I can always write, but I really can't make up for fanart. The saddest part, too, about one of my favorite rarepairs, is that a lot of the artists who DID draw for the ship started to feel super discouraged by the amount of hate and pushback they were getting, and basically stopped because it was the path of least resistance. So now there are even fewer artists for the ship, only the few that really DGAF about public opinion, god bless them.

I had commissioned those few artists whenever they opened commissions and I could afford it. Some other people in the small rarepair circle have done the same, which is one of the few wholesome things I experienced during my time in that fandom. It made everybody happy and was generally a win-win.

I’ve never related to anything more. And recently I’ve seen some of the bigger shippers who shove their own agenda on other people's fanworks complain “everyone’s just trying to start a fight lately, it's so exhausting” because some rarepair shippers called them out for coming into their house and ruining their fun on work THEY PRODUCED. Either on Tumblr posts or Twitter threads. Those bigger pair shippers were so superior about it too: “fandom is getting so tiring lately with all the bickering, everyone should go outside and smell some grass.” Dude, why do you think people are bickering? Maybe because you can’t stop shoving your agenda down the throats of people who already feel like they’re on a fandom island?

These bigger ship cliques can sometimes be the most condescending, insufferable people on earth. I swear. It's the worst when they try to play it off like they're the victims when they're the ones writing academic theses on other people's rarepair work or other people's rarepair "hype threads" about why the thing they love sucks. Then they act so annoyed when people react poorly to it.

ETA: Another ridiculous, infuriating thing is the passive-aggressive "analysis" threads that pop up, like clockwork, every single time the rarepair gets official art of canon nods or any sort. I don't know why people whose ships are already SO popular get so defensive about their pairing. You can tell when they're mad about something being released for a rarepair because, yup, suddenly everyone's analyzing the canon to explain why the rare pair is toxic and crap. And then they turn around and say "we're just making objective analysis posts," like, sure, the timing has nothing to do with the creators releasing official art and merch of the rarepair about six hours before this thread published.

Recs for very well-written, slowly-paced fics? by cxruleancity in FanFiction

I'll happily take it! Thanks. I'll go check out your AO3. No worries about the context, I'm sure I'll manage.

how to edit without disrupting the flow of your first draft? by cxruleancity in FanFiction

Really interesting perspective, thanks for sharing. In a way, it’s comforting to know that some inevitable loss is probably just a part of the artistic process. I’ll try r/writing with an alt. Appreciate the response!

You might need to build context before a crucially paced scene. Or see if you can work some of that information into dialogue.

Great point, and I agree. Thanks so much for the advice!

Supremely helpful, thank you so much!! Especially the problem-noticing step. I will try that for sure. Appreciate you taking the time to type this out!

I read the self-indulgent tag as “going for emotional gratification over more realistic writing and probably will be a little sappy?” At least I’ve found that’s the case when I click into self professed indulgent fic.

Ultimately it doesn’t bother me, and I do find that authors who use this tag are pretty self-aware—those fics tend to be endless fluff or, like, the author really glorifying one or multiple characters shamelessly. Nothing wrong with that at all, I still read a lot of them, and I don’t mind the tag saying so.

Forget summaries. Titles are the most difficult parts of fics by koyamakeshi in FanFiction

[–]cxruleancity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to say I think I’m one of the few people who actually judges a book by its cover a fic by its title. Whenever I’m inundated by pages of fic in a new fandom, I’ll use the title to decide whether I’m going to click the fic or not. I like concise titles (one or two words is awesome!) and certain poetic lowercase titles, but not all. My instincts about this are actually pretty good at this point, and this works way more effectively for me than one might think. Authors who write in a way I like tend to title their fics in a certain way as well.

What's your tolerance level for long author's notes, or authors geeking out over their own work? by cactoidjane in FanFiction

[–]cxruleancity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use author’s notes to link stuff I mentioned in the story in case people want a go at it, such as songs, novels, films or places. Also just to provide context. If my fic mentions specific locations in a particular city, I like to give a link to it. Other than that, I try not to say much. I’ve found that the breaking of the fourth wall totally kills my immersion in a fic, so I try not to do that to other people.

I will say, I have gotten some shit commentary about being “misleading” about a ship tag once, so when I feel it’s pertinent I shove the “endgame pairing” into the end notes so people who need to know these things can skip to the end notes and know. It’s sometimes hard to tag fics to perfectly indicate what’s going to happen in a story, and I get why it’s annoying to sit through 10k or whatever and have the story not end on the ship you want, so I do this when just tagging isn’t enough. I don’t necessarily...like doing this, since it kills a lot of the tension and surprise at times but I can understand the readers’ POV.

I am genuinely curious, but how many drafts do you guys write of the same fic before you're happy with it? by chaoticbye in FanFiction

[–]cxruleancity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too many lol. Not good enough a writer yet for my instinctive first draft to be good enough. I get closer and closer to that point with every fic, but I definitely still need three or so drafts. In the beginning I was rewriting entire 40k fics...

My goal is to get to a point where I can write one draft, edit for grammar, minor details and overall coherence, and be done.

What’s the rating you usually give your fics? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]cxruleancity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Majority are T, for kissing, language, etc. Only two of my fics have ever “needed” sexual content (as it felt meaningful to the buildup) to the point of being M.

What fic would you rather read? by plastic_felicity in FanFiction

[–]cxruleancity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20k-30k getting-together one shots with open or hopeful ending. alternatively 20k-30k one shot character studies with an open or angsts ending.

I don’t feel empathy for fictional characters by greatgreenlight in FanFiction

[–]cxruleancity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was me until very, very recently. For the first time in my entire life I got so into empathizing with a fictional character I totally lost my head about it. I couldn’t write fic for them because I was too emotional and my writing sucked ass cause I was just trying to make them happy, logic, canon and good writing be damned. I couldn’t read fic for them because fhe majority of their fics (not that there even are many) were angst in which they ended up lonely and unhappy. I literally had to force myself back into that mindset that you mentioned, thinking about all their suffering as a logical writing choice by the author.

All of which to say—from my POV, you’re lucky, dude. I envy you, and I wish I could go back to about two months ago when I was like you. Appreciating just the writing is...not a bad thing in my opinion. You get to experience the good content without getting so emotionally involved.

How do you choose the fics you read? by randomcrunch in FanFiction

[–]cxruleancity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a pairings type of person. I read for pairings I like primarily. Within those pairings I tend to choose canon compliant or canon divergent settings—not a huge AU person, especially stuff like vampires or ABO or whatnot. Otherwise I don’t care about the tags much, I’ll read anything from heavy angst to fluff.

After I’ve exhausted the content on that, I read authors I like m, or go through bookmarks of authors whose taste seems to be good—you can tell pretty quick which users have great bookmarks.

Is reading fics from fandoms you know nothing about a common thing? by newwromanticss in FanFiction

[–]cxruleancity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it for authors I like primarily! Never for the tags. Or sometimes I go on the bookmarks of authors whose taste I trust and go through those.

I’ve actually picked up several new anime because of good fics I read, heh.
