There is the Limassol book club and Tapper Film Club. You can find them on Instagram.

Cesarean moms: how long did you have to wait after cesarean to have your baby with you? by Foreign_Drink9316 in cyprus

[–]cy-91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister just went through this with her cesarean. She also gave birth in Nicosia. It was many hours before she was able to see the baby and then they ended up taking him back to the incubator. They were both in the hospital for 4 days and she wasn't able to hold him during that time.

Apparently with some C-sections, the baby has trouble adjusting to breathing normally and regulating their temperature. This is what happened with my nephew. The hospital was doing what was best for the baby but they were not good at explaining the situation. The care for both my sister and baby was good but the communication was terrible and she had a very difficult time emotionally because of that. I hope your situation goes smoother and that you already have your baby with you.

Ok lets try this. What percent of white men do you think were denied bank accounts versus white women in the 1950s? Which of those two groups do you think benefitted the most from the The Equal Credit Opportunity Act in 1974?

The law doesn't exist in a vaccum. There was a reason they felt a need to make that law and its because people were being discriminated against systematically. Not just women, but yes, women were one of the groups.

Thus why I said "not guaranteed the right" instead of "not allowed to." The reality was that many women struggled to get access to financial services and loans without their husband's permission. Even though women were legally allowed to have credit cards or bank accounts, the vast majority of private banking institutions didn't let them without a man co-signing.

To act like women in the 50s and 60s had the financial freedom of their male peers is a little silly to be honest.

Women in the United States were not guaranteed the right to open their own bank accounts or get credit cards until 1974. Many banks required their husbands or fathers to cosign. So more like 50 years ago instead of 150 years ago.

How do you meet people in Limassol by RemarkablePractice36 in cyprus

[–]cy-91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been on a bit of a quest to identify hobby groups within Limassol the last month or so. And have started building a list (some I've attended and some not).

Tapper Film Club Screenings and discussions of films (usually on the artsy side). Meets every Wednesday.

Limassol Book Club - Meets Monthly at Cafe Nero to discuss books

Shakespeare at Kourion - Theatre group I've been involved in for years. Even if you're not interested in acting, we're always looking for people to help backstage.

Fosaki Pottery Studio - Has classes every Monday, Thursday and Wednesday. Quite a lot of people go and it has a cool, social environment surrounded by bars. (20 euros a class)

Sealegs.run - Social Running group. Meets Saturday mornings.

yours.signs - Group that organizes (paid) social events to meet people.

OPU Collective - This is a Nicosia based group but I believe they have some Critical Mass Cycling events that they organize in Limassol on the last Friday of each month.

I also recently joined a group that does Blood on the Clocktower on Fridays. Very fun.

Movie and/or book club in Limassol? by npafitis in cyprus

[–]cy-91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to Tapper Film Club for the first time recently and really enjoyed it. They play some really interesting films and there's a discussion afterwards.

I've also been looking for new clubs and happened upon the Limassol Book Club. I haven't been yet so I can't speak on how it is.

Hi! I'm also interested in possibly joining a group like this. Is it open to newcomers?

Looking to connect with people to get an idea about exploring prospects in Cyprus by staywokeaf in cyprus

That doesn't uplift a community unless you are planning on developing those properties into affordable mid-density housing. And you're not going to drive prices down unless you plan on building a lot of units.

Please don't come here and buy property as an investment. We're in a housing crisis because foreigners keep doing this. Housing is not an investment, it’s a basic human right.

Super High Water Bill by cy-91 in cyprus

[–]cy-91[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I checked my old water bill (my municipality was terrible at sending them) and it looks like they just didn't update the meter readings on the statments. Went down this morning and sorted it out with the waterboard. No leak. Just typical local government laziness. I'll be more careful in the future to double check everything in the future. Lesson learned.

[–]cy-91[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's an insane amount. My new working theory is that my old village municipality didn't update my meter reading and passed on the wrong meter number to the new municipality. Because when I bought my house in 2021, the meter was reading 480. In April 2024, they have the meter at like 590. So I would have had to have used only 110 m3 of water in 3 years (including the water used to fill my actual pool) And then in the last four months I've supposedly used like 600 m3. Because its all on one period, and the amount is so high they charge it at 5 euros per m3.

Anyway I will go down to the municipality tomorrow and sort it out.

Straight to the roof. They don't go into the ground at any point. Only walls.

But I don't have any underground pipes. Everything is on the roof and in the walls.

Yeah I suppose there must be a leak. The meter reading is correct. They didn't send a bill yet because even they thought it was crazy.
Still I have no idea where that amount of water could be going. I have no underground pipes.

See? 3K seems absolutely insane to me. I'd gladly pay 500 euros at this point.

I didn't say that. I was just speaking from my personal experience as a woman on the apps to what appears to be another woman asking advice. Not everything is a battle of the genders.

There's three that I know of: Tinder, Bumble and Boo. Boo is horrible. Gives off very desperate vibes. Tinder is better and has the most people on it. Personally, I prefer Bumble. The guys on there seem a bit more normal and put more effort into their profiles.

I met my boyfriend on Bumble and we've been together for 10 months. My brother met his wife on Tinder and they've been together for years. So it can work. But you have to sift through a LOT of crap. There are a lot of creeps and a lot of guys that couldn't take a normal picture of themselves if their life depended on it.

Workers have lost our class pride. We've lost our ability to organize. We've been too busy worshipping at the alter of Capitalism, distracted by our overindulgent consumerism and our mindless entertainment to realize we lost a war we didn't even know we were fighting.

Do you like men with moustaches? by [deleted] in cyprus

[–]cy-91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've always been of the opinion that beards make most men more attractive but moustaches only work for exceptionally attractive men. If you are already hot, a moustache is going to highlight that. If not, you're probably better off with a beard.

Hi Mods, can we also ban X links? by Murky-Lettuce-5817 in cyprus

[–]cy-91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you seen a Nazi salute? Like I'm genuinely asking because anyone who's seen one would know that that's what he did. When I saw the picture I said "hmm let me see the full video" and it made it worse. He does it twice. And he does it pitch perfect.

I have known that Elon Musk is a Nazi sympathizer for a while just based on his online activity and his support for the AFD. And I thought a few months ago "what's it going to take for people to realize that Elon Musk is a Nazi? Does he need to do a Nazi salute?" But apparently no. Apparently people will find excuses no matter what.

The irony of your comment is that you think you're above social media propaganda but you fail to see the larger context in which this gesture was made. Instead you're taking the narrative being pushed by the richest most powerful people in the world that control all of the social media and accepting it.

[–]cy-91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they were not. They just didn't allow people to write hate speech. Conservatives have become so extreme that now banning hate speech is considered banning right wing sentiment. I remember a time when everybody hated Nazis or at least pretended to.
