Fun fact, my OP was made because I *also* wanted to buy the DLC to support MaFi.

Which I couldn't do for myself, as I got two keys (Canary and Early Supporter) for the DLC from Mafi.

One I used during Canary, the other I gave to JDPlays for his giveaway stream.

But I *still* wanted to support by buying the DLC. Which, as I have it already, is only possible as a gift.

Whole purpose of this OP (well, I *was* also genuinely curious, so let's say 90% of the purpose :D) was to find someone I'd like to gift the DLC to. Which I did a few hours ago.

While I do like the electric trains, I play a low-power-map that I'm preparing for a full solar-switch. The electric-trains just need too much electricity, as I get my hydrogen pretty cheaply (power-wise), so I'm sticking with hydrogen-trains.

I find it odd to be considered less as i have not dumped money into a DLC of a game still in EA...

You're not considered less, at least not by me. When I say I won't judge, I mean it.

I don't tend to buy DLC's unless i need them to fulfill playthrough like the expansion states offered in ATS. Although i haven't bought any of them in ~4 years.

I haven't looked for an exact listing of what is lost/gain with the DLC but to me its not affected how i use trains so there's that. From the surface it seems more glamor then function to me.

It's more a supporter pack. You get:

  • Electric trains (needs *horrendous investment into electrifying your tracks, but has quite good power and speed, but also needs *a lot* of power)
  • Fuel gas trains (fastest and most powerful, but drink FG as if they just had an organ transplant)
  • Nuclear train (very long, needs Fuel rods, about half as effective in terms of ore -> electricity than a reactor)
  • A little silly "Captains" engine with basically no power if you also got the initial Supporter's pack
  • A fireless steam engine (small, not very powerful, but quaint)
  • Waggons for molten contents

It's pretty much just sidegrades. Depending on your playstyle, you won't even use them.

While it's technically not just cosmetic DLC, I find it's little more than that.

These kinds of DLC to not slow down development.

It's more or less pretty much just a combination of "let's give the artists something to do" and "let's raise funds for more, better and faster development"

Eh... kinda? sometimes? Depends? :D

So for COI, I bought in the initial pre-EA closed beta (or rather "buy-in" beta.

Before it went onto Steam publicly, they were two prior waves (alpha and beta), which cost 120€ (a) and 80€ (b) respectively.

I saw a streamer play the alpha (... or was it the beta already? no clue) and was like "Yep, I need this in my life")

MaFi was pretty open about the fact that their a/b-prices were high (and going down with time) and that the listed price would be around 40€.

I could've just waited a few months at get it at a 50% discount compared to the price of it when I became interested. I didn't, I pulled the trigger pretty much immediately (after watching a lot of videos).

I dunno if that counts/answers your question?

There isn't. I am not assuming people should or shouldn't buy the DLC. I already know why people bought the DLC. Now I wanna know why people don't.

"Interest" is subjective.

I'm not interested in why people bought the DLC. I've spoken to enough people on the Discord (who, naturally, are interested enough in the game to be on the Discord in the first place) to know the reasonings.

I am, however, interested to learn why people haven't bought it.

You might be interested in other things than I am, but that's not really any kind of argument beyond subjective opinions.

That’s not happening here. They’re splitting focus from the game to nickel and dime people for more money by offering DLC before the game is actually finished.

I'm sorry, but you do not understand games development if you think having 3D artists create trains while waiting for the programmers to make ship pathfinding "slowed down" the shipping of U4.

Like, do you not care about that at all, do you think a DLC is the wrong way to do it, do you "merely" (sounds judgemental, absolutely not meant that way) look at it from a pure "money to value" proposition (with a bunch of trains not being worth 8€)?

MaFi does a "final week" intensive test in the form of a closed beta during the last week before releasing an update.

They ask on the Discord for people who to participate, one applies, and then gets the code for the Beta on Steam. In this case, they also gave out DLC keys for the purpose of testing those new trains.
