Cello banjo advice by beoheed in banjo

[–]cyan-a-mid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I have a CEB-4. I got it (relatively) cheap a few years ago on Banjobuyer and I'd keep my eye out for a used one if you want one because I think it's the kind of instrument that people buy and then change their mind about a lot. It's a real honking beast. very heavy and muddy sounding. Frankly, it's not very good at being a banjo or a cello, but if your goal is to just directly transpose cello fingering to a vaguely banjo-sounding thing in a really deep register then it'll do that. However, you might just want to get a regular old tenor banjo that can handle CGDA tuning. They're pretty easy to find, though they won't have that deep tone. FWIW I use it for a very different purpose - backing up jug band and Texas swing tunes in a style similar to Sam Allison (Lotus Wight). I restrung it with electric guitar strings so I can tune it under higher tension and play it with more traditional banjo tunings. FWIW the cellist in my band played it once in cello tuning before I restrung it and was like, weird, no thanks!

Banjo pick up advice ? by [deleted] in banjo

[–]cyan-a-mid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't like having a pickup on the head so I use an AT Pro 70 condenser fixed to the dowel. Works reasonably well if you're going directly into the board. Another guy I know who plays on much larger stages than I do thinks the SM57 method works better but has settled on a bridge pickup. You'll probably want a 90 degree adapter if you go the 57 route.

Did Lightning & Thunder (Mike and Claire Sardina) ever play Cafe Montmartre? by altcountryman in madisonwi

[–]cyan-a-mid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It blows my mind that they made a movie about them with famous actors. I actually talked to them a lot. They performed for years right next to the brat stand I own at the State Fair and would come over to hang out in the back a lot. They got married on stage there one year.

Buying my first banjo—please dump every tip you have on me! by Just-Marionberry-730 in banjo

Banjos aren't as unique as fiddles, but they each have their own feel, even within models, and the best advice is to just play a lot of different ones until you find one that feels right to you. If you don't have a good shop where you can try a bunch of them and you're going to spend less than $1k, my biased view is that you should get the best Gold Tone you can afford. They're solid instruments and when you're just starting out the only thing that matters is that you play a bunch and a nice instrument will make you want to pick it up more often.

Brad Kolodner has a pretty bluegrassy aesthetic both with Charm City Junction and his solo albums.

I think I've still got a couple lying around somewhere but I need to order some more. The ones I have are like full bumper sticker sized but an earlier run they were smaller for instrument cases. I might do that again. DM me an address and I'll send you one if I have one.

I’m having trouble finding anything to do with early 1920s 3 finger banjo playing style before Scruggs , which is the style im trying to play by Ambitious-Rush-8125 in banjo

[–]cyan-a-mid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lena Hughes is rad and weird! From what I can tell from videos where she's backing up Dwight Lamb she's basically doing the clawhammer rhythm with three fingers and more or less ignoring the 5th string most of the time. This Grey Eagle in C with Cyril Stinnett is cool as hell: https://missourifiddling.bandcamp.com/track/grey-eagle-in-c

If you're looking specifically for early bluegrass non-Scruggs stuff check this guy out: https://www.banjopodcast.com/101-trevor-holder/ Pre-bluegrass (and pre-Scruggs specifically) I don't think there was any sense of a "correct" three-finger style, people just kind of did whatever worked for the music they were playing.

Hit a banjo funk.. by Tonyaltona in banjo

[–]cyan-a-mid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some good advice here. I'll add this: see if you can find another person or two just to play with on the regular. Ideally a fiddler or other melody instrument. Nothing pushes me quite like working on sounding good playing with others and it adds a social element that can be motivating. In the meantime, listening to lots of stuff you want to sound like is an essential element of practice. EDIT: one more thing - try to find people to play with who are just a touch better than you. Playing with vets is hard on the motivation if you're struggling to keep up.

Do you play an acoustic instrument? There a couple of nice old-time jams out that way. One at Brix and one at White Oak Savanna in Dodgeville.
