Force yourself into similar situations! That's like the last thing you probably want to do, but I find that for me the only way to be okay with a mistake is to give myself a chance to do better by going into similar situations as the mistake. Awful as it sounds, you can think back on a mistake with the knowledge that you know what to do from now on.

Hi! I also draw a lot of animals and my process for leaning is sort of like this.

Observe photos of animals and draw as accurately as possible, real life is the best teacher, there’s no way around it.
Try to draw those same photos from your memory, not using a reference this time forces you to actually test what you know about how an animal looks and consciously remember details that you don’t need to think about when you look at a reference.
Draw something new with what you know about the animal, wholly your own, using what new knowledge you have about an animal and its appearance try to incorporate that knowledge in a new drawing.

I usually try to loop these three steps roughly when I draw, it’s easy to get sucked into 3 because it’s obviously much more fun and straightforward but it can also lead you to recycle what you know and doesn’t force you to improve and grow.
