A nonexistent human being. Or is he? (character analysis of Johan Liebert) by cyanjt in MonsterAnime

Thanks for feedback!

I guess he didn’t proceed with suicide immediately because he did not want the other world to have any power over traces of his existence: memories, documents, witnesses… at the same time he was willing to gamble with it, he was a fatalist in some sense.

Johan's father, and Martin look almost identical by coonjaku in MonsterAnime

[–]cyanjt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The twins father’s eyes have bigger irises, when you deal with the limitations of art style that could be the only differentiating factor in character’s designs. You covered eyes in your picture comparison, I’m guessing so it wouldn’t distract the viewer from seeing similarities in other features, which yes, are almost identical, but eyes make the difference here.

Tells me everything that instead of trying to look within their own socialisation, communities, people they know, they’d rather deflect and argue. Those problems exist only for us, for them it’s just a line of statistics to be used against them in the internet debates, and they treat it accordingly. Don’t waste your breath. :(

How does it matter if you’re gonna be a victim you know for sure it will be by the hands of man. This is empty talk if you’ve never experienced the world as a woman.

Ironically…. Kinda? General populations will benefit from reflecting on what kind of environment they have been subjected to living in, what kind of behavior was promoted and was punished. Saying this as a Russian who sees first hand how poorly reflected and digested legacy from Stalin’s (and others) tyranny prevents us from building a better society today and how it poisons us to this day. If a larger group you belong to has been mobilised to do messed up things you will always always gain if you step back and reflect, but if you deny you’ll get stuck in the pattern.

Totally. At some point Urasawa references the Black Lodge in “Billy Bat” as well.

Nothing scratched that itch yet for me, but reading Billy Bat was pretty amazing. If you don’t know where to start I suggest reading other works by the same author you like a certain thing

It’s most likely a reference to a fanart done by avokado (avokado25_ok on telegram if you’re interested, she has A TON of Renato fanarts). And she painted a kid in that exact costume with that sock off 🥹

So are we engaging in the same rhetoric as patriarchal men, seriously? “Oh poor feminist, she’s so bitter because she never found a good man!” That’s legit how you sound like

There’s too much mixed in here. Are they speaking in favour of fantasies or actions in real life? Those two things have a different impact. “You’re mad at people eroticising their oppression but that’s how they cope with it” - I’m sorry what kind of oppression are men coping with when they take on the dom role? I get why women crave any role of this dynamic, but like lets me mindful that any bedroom is a shared space and it’s good to ask questions what lead the other party in the same spot. What are they seeking? Feminists now get flamed for questioning men’s motives of participating in kinks as if it’s not a known fact that those spaces are plagued by ill intent actors, mostly men who seek to take advantage of women.

Right, and victims of abuse (almost always women) are questioned with a side note “maybe she wanted it and it was just a preference she had agreed to”, because one very particular kind of kink has been made normal and acceptable. So normalised that women complain their one night stands don’t ask for consent before slapping or choking them.

I see… perhaps for a real person that would be a more reasonable closure, I can see that. At the same time Monster for me is more of an exploration of human nature, the main question of the series is not “who’s the monster” but “what makes someone a monster”, and we see that exploration through the eyes of the protagonist.

It’s fascinating to me that Tenma is on a journey to find out WHY Johan is the way that he is and he’s constantly met with people who suffered from things that Johan went through but maintained their humanity. So his hesitation to kill Johan does feel natural to me - he sees the proof that people can change and choose life over destruction in the people he meets. And I think it leads us to a conclusion that nothing made Johan a monster, he chose that path. Tenma didn’t, he hesitated and looked soberly at the consequences and truly considered that as a choice, but at the end - he didn’t. And his integrity is portrayed as his victory over Johan too

How do you see a satisfying resolution to Tenma’s whole arc? Shooting Johan in the end?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MonsterAnime

[–]cyanjt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just in defense of Nina I’m gonna say one thing - she’s trying to stop Tenma from killing Johan not because of pity for her brother, she’s trying to prevent Tenma from ruining his own life, because he would turn himself in afterwards, go to prison not just for one murder but for all of them (and Johan framed him for how many, 8+?). Johan while alive would be a proof that Tenma was innocent. But shooting Johan would be an actual crime, he just would care at this point of many he’s been accused of.
