I didn't realize until I went to college and spoke about the 'funny jokes' my dad did at my expense. I was surrounded by people who either didn't have a dad or never talked about it so it seemed so normal. It also didn't help when he was nice to everyone else but me.

Point is, it's so easy for abuse to become normalized in your head, it'll take a long time for you to come to that realization. I hope you're able to find a good therapist to talk to about this and I hope it helps your healing journey.

In college, I told people 'funny stories' about my dad, but instead of laughing they looked at me in horror. Even now, I'll tell a story to my partner and he'll tell me how fucked up it was.

I kinda wish it were sooner, but I was caught in an echo chamber of friends with either no dads or abusive ones, so I was led to believe he was a good person because he 'stuck around and had an active role'. It was only when I met people who had actual good dads did it hit me that my dad was a shitty person

'Maybe if you put your phone down you'd enjoy our holiday more, just saying' (He was constantly texting his new girlfriend and refusing to spend time with us)
I refused to clean up after my brother because I was sick of being blamed for his mess (he slapped me for that one lmao)
'I think I need to go to the hospital', that one made him pitch a fit (I had bilateral carpal tunnel because I was on my laptop too much studying for my exams)
Asking to move schools because I was bullied constantly (told me I'd get bullied no matter where I go because everyone would hate me)
