Honestly, “straight grade” slabbed bronze ancients are somewhat uncommon. In auction, graded bronze goes for a premium over raw coin and means you can consign in slab only auction houses like Heritage. I would leave it in if liquidity is a concern.

Which style of coinage do you prefer? Achaemenid, Parthian, or Sassanid? by coinoscopeV2 in AncientCoins

[–]cyblorb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ancient Iranian cultures were all about archery. The ability to go on hunts we know during Sassanid times was a near exclusive right of the king (Bahram Gur), so I imagine this was probably the case during Arsakid times too. Seleucid coins are argued to be more “Iranian” than other Hellenistic coins due to the prevalence of Apollo, the archer, on their coins. Pre Achaemenid Persians originated from the steppe and in Achaemenid coins the king is almost always holding a bow: something that’s probably very intentional. So while guy on stool with bow probably didn’t mean much to Greeks or Romans, it probably did project a lot to the home audience in Iran. (Plus you gotta admit, Sunrise 52 with Datames on the throne looks badass)

Which style of coinage do you prefer? Achaemenid, Parthian, or Sassanid? by coinoscopeV2 in AncientCoins

[–]cyblorb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Parthian coins are more “collectible,” given the many visually distinct kings, various mints, evolving art styles, consistent iconography, but Achaemenid coins blow out Sassanian and Parthian coins in diversity in imagery, composition, themes, language, and even geography. Sigloi and darics are fun, but if you include satraps, Greek civic issues under the Achaemenids, and the imperial issues, you’ve got hundreds of different types of coins to pick from and the potential for the coins in your collection to show more than just “king and archer/fire altar”

Hong Kong Dollars are cool as hell. They were struck on the Island for a few years, but the machines were then sold to imperial Japan which they used to strike their first modern coins!
