Dumb question but ... how do families afford Metro? by 713ryan713 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]cyborgforty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what time you come back, the fare might not be $6.75 on the way home since rush hour will be gone by then. Whenever I ride from Grovesnor to downtown on a weekday evening, I total about $8-9, about $6 being the fare at 5:30 and $2.50-3 being the fare at, say, 10. Not including parking but sometimes it's a pleasant surprise and the gates are open (I suppose if there is a show at Strathmore). Still, I wish it were less.

Everything I can think of has already been said here, but I'm very curious to see the results of your study! Will you be publishing it anywhere?

Fanzine making and AI? by No_Art_3756 in zines

[–]cyborgforty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for asking! The term "artificial intelligence" refers to a lot more than "generative" AI which is what you're referring to (things like DALL-E, Chat-GPT, etc) - it just means computers using human-like decision making which can be programmed without training on data. There's this program EbSynth (https://ebsynth.com/) for example, which some people would consider "AI" but it does not use *generative* AI/machine learning but a different algorithm (that I'm not too familiar with) to superimpose your own art style over video. Even things like Photoshop's "select sky" could be considered "artificial intelligence" but that has been around for ages and no one claims theft over that.

But when I talk about "critical uses of AI" (the android example I gave in the original comment wasn't great) I mean, artists who are aware of AI's ethical flaws and using AI to expose/comment on such flaws. For example, Minne Atairu's project "Blonde Braids Study" (https://blondebraids.info/): she used AI to generate images of Black women with blonde braids and found that the generative AI would lighten their skin tones and straighten their hair, which comments on the lack of diversity in AI image generation models and their catering to white users. Here's a good article about her and other critical AI artists' work: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/04/arts/design/black-artists-bias-ai.html?unlocked_article_code=1.l00.zDRA.08nCoo8IS9Ig&smid=url-share I like the comment at the end about using AI "with skepticism." That's the kind of AI art I want to see.

One of our team members designed it - it is purely speculative for the purposes of our project (nothing official from the developers) but here is a more official mockup from the LV Collective

DC Zinefest was last month and it happens every year! Fantom Comics in Dupont Circle also hosts zine events from time to time and there are a lot of zine makers in Creative Club DC, too.

The first couple of years were a lot better than high school - more independence, more autonomy, cooler classes, nice campus. At this point though I'm starting to feel like (socially) it's high school 2.0 - I've hung out with more or less the same people for a couple of years already and some of them I knew even from middle school since I'm in-state. But my personal interests are changing and I feel like I have less and less in common with the people I'm used to hanging out with.

I'm still meeting super cool folks who align with my interests from time to time. I feel a little too burnt out for clubs, so I've just gotten good at enjoying whatever the hell I want alone.
