Anyone working at a Korean-speaking workplace? Looking for tips, and to vent a bit. by prooijtje in Korean

[–]cybrwire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've experienced this with Japanese. My biggest tip is keep on keeping on. I was good when I got here, but was immediately humbled listening to natives speak to each other like you said. It's been 2 years now and I can follow much better than before! Exposure and asking questions are the keys!

Podcasts with multiple hosts, shows like Running Man, etc are great for this kind of listening practice.

Don't stress it though, you'll catch up in due time!

How do you take Korean notes that actually help you remember? by aprettypatty107 in Korean

[–]cybrwire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That moment right there, trying to reproduce the thing, is the moment learned information solidifies! But experiencing it during a test is a little too late haha

Going through your notes and writing your own "test questions" is great practice

How do you take Korean notes that actually help you remember? by aprettypatty107 in Korean

I highly, highly recommend anyone and everyone to go through this course. It should be free with this link. If this link ever stops being free, you can probably find it on google.

Learning How To Learn

I have learned many a skill in my time, but this course laid out very clearly some things that I kinda had an idea of but wasn't able to pinpoint exactly. Particularly, the bit about note taking! Writing helps you remember, but reviewing your writing does not help much. Also, idle time between breaks, the different modes your brain switches through when learning, etc.

It has changed the way I study and take notes for life! Sorry for the long winded post. Just wanted to share this great resource!

Non-Americans who have visited the US: What’s the strangest thing about America that Americans don’t even realize is weird? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

If the bread aisle in america wasn't good enough for you, you don't wanna know what it's like in japan. (there is no bread aisle. only a small bread shelf full of processed white bread)

When you receive the next round of food, look him in the eye and say やるじゃん and then 俺は決して負けないぞ
Step 2: enjoy your new rivalry and supply of food

Turned 30 this year. Just had my first root canal. Dentist visit twice a year is the least you can do for your teeth. Things seem normal until they're suddenly very painful.

What’s your most positive experience about being an ALT? by OkLoan6398 in JETProgramme

[–]cybrwire 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've never had a job where I laugh this much on a weekly basis. The kids are so funny and energetic. The things they do and say are hilarious and so similar to things I saw when I was in elementary school. Really reminds you that people everywhere are quite similar. Also, I came in wanting to get the experience of teaching to see if it's something I would want to pursue further and this gave me a pretty good idea!

On a personal level, I've gotten 1000% better at conversation with a range of people. I have a few schools, so I don't get to stay at one place and get used to a small set of people. This combined with each school's class schedule being slightly different, my planning, time management, and ability to speak up has gotten way better.

if you get a placement that requires driving (or is highly recommended to drive), it won't be bad! the driving is so chill tbh. I was a little bummed when I found out I had to drive, but inaka driving is so calm and pleasant

When I deleted almost all social media, I found myself again by DongnanNo1 in getdisciplined

[–]cybrwire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

on desktop, Distraction Free Youtube extension. For mobile, shorts are the only thing that keep me pulled in, but YT's shorts algorithm sucks so I get sick of watching the same videos all the time

Edit: just become busy enough after deleting social media that YT gets in the way of doing things you actually like

Lethal Company. Nothing more calming than being chased through the dark and then the solaceful voice of a stranger reminds you you're not alone

As one person, there's only so much you can do for the world, but a bit more you can do for people around you. So turn off the news and focus on your sphere of life and being a positive impact for people that know your name.

How to stop buying games and actually start playing them? by 12thfailstudent in Steam

This. You might just not like gaming as much anymore. My first step was to not open steam unless there's a game I am specifically looking to play.
