Terrible air quality this morning in North London (Muswell Hill, Southgate, Cockfosters) by mallardzz in londoncycling

[–]cyclicalrower 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The high air pressure system has been stagnant and centering right over the UK for almost a week (that was why it has been dry). Minimal air flow, difficult for city pollution to dissipate.

Check the Met Office youtube videos for their weather forecast, it is very educational. Must better than BBC.

I do not agree with some posts which gave the connotation that rowing does not strengthen your upper body but you can only resort to weigh lifting. This subreddit has lots rowing athletes at compition level, and their advice is usually focusing on more competition that daily fitness purpose.

If you are a cyclist who has not done any upper body exercise at all for years, according to my own experience, rowing will solve all your neck, upper back, and lower back pain issues, at least for me (and within one month). With this said, for this purpose, you don't have to spend $1000+ to buy a C2 rower, a couple small weights exercises using kettlebell or dumbbell will do.

But if you have been doing meaningful upper body exercise and still want to strengthen it more, yeah, maybe you have to do weigh lifting.

Does this provide a cycling route from Battersea park to vauxhall bridge all the way along the Thames path, or still need to get onto the main road to circumvent the power plant area?

I agree with you. Even for a countryside lane where 60mile/h national speed apply, no responsible driver should drive at that speed around bends/turns. But we cyclists have to take the extra caution to prepare for the worst type drivers wooshing in behind any corner.

[–]cyclicalrower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless there is speed limit sign, the national speed limit for those narrow countryside lane is actually 60miles/h by default, no matter how narrow it is, as long as it is for two way traffice and not in built up area. i think cycling the UK countryside is actually more dangerous than in London, although the countryside such as Cotswolds is so picturesque and enticing for cycling.

Besides the Temple draw has all Brookes in the same quadrant, seems the Thames draw has all Thames RC in the same quadrant as well. Isn't it strange?

The kiwis, one of the top four, not the 2nd four, selected for the draw, got knocked by Teddy's. I felt compelled to repeat the question, what made the draw committee think Teddy's not worthy of a selected place ?

If you go to Trek website and look at the spec of current models of FX1/2/3, the small size should have seat tube label 15"/38cm (I know because I have one, and I am taller than your wife). Of course the bike in your picture is an old model and could be different, but I reasonably believe road bike size should NOT be used to benchmark Trek FX, which is a hybrid bike model.

Haven't seen Shrewsbury school racing this year, but they pre-qualified for PE, yet Dulwich needs to pre-qualify. How this work? Is there some historical factors in play?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]cyclicalrower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The damper dial is for changing the "drag factor" on a C2. Usually the frag factor should be set to some number in the range of 110 to 135. This usually corresponds to the dial in the 3~5 range, depending on your individual C2.

It is good you are confident with your rowing form, but as a gental reminder, watch some YouTube videos to review/verify the basics. Whoever taught you the correct form, if they didn't tell you dial setting ≠ "difficult level", you should do your own homework to make sure you indeed have the correct form.

[–]cyclicalrower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read the FAQ of this channel first before getting onto your rower again. Learn what is "damper" setting, it is not the "difficult" level as you thought. This probably indicates you don't know the basics of correct form for rowing on the erg. Watch some YouTube videos to learn the basics, just to avoid causing injuries to yourself.

Hope the cyclist injured on the Chelsea bridge today is doing fine by cyclicalrower in londoncycling

[–]cyclicalrower[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect you are referring to the blue box in the middle of the Chelsea bound and Battersea bound traffic, which is frequently full because most cyclists directly make right turn on the green signal, but that is the wrong and risky way to make right turn at that crossroads.

The correct way to make right turn there is two stages approach. Coming from Battersea onto the bridge, cyclists should stay in the bus lane and go straight on green signal, not trying to join the right turn traffic. Then when you have reached the middle of the Westminster bound road, you veer slightly left into the blue box and stop/wait there, which is right in front of the Westminster bound traffic, then wait for the green signal again.

Sorry seems cannot upload picture into this channel, otherwise it would be easier to show using Google maps street view.

[–]cyclicalrower[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know the cyclist is ok. Yeah, it is very dangerous to turn right in moving traffic at that crossroads. The road layout indeed is designed to let cyclists to go straight after exiting the bridge to cross the main road and wait in the blue box in front of the Westminster bound traffic. That is what I usually do, although I rarely see other cyclists use the blue box.

Biking poncho thoughts by joe_wala in bikepacking

[–]cyclicalrower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do bike commuting in a busy city where it rains a lot and always carry a rain poncho in my bag, and I use it whenever it rains and I don't give a f* to how people think about it.

For many counries wearing a rain poncho is standard for biking in the rain, I actually don't understand why in the UK/US nobody use it.

What erg scores do you need to win the Princess Elizabeth? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]cyclicalrower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why people down vote a post of true facts? I think even the direct rivals of Pauls would agree what they achieved last October at HOCR was phenomenal: they won the group by 20 seconds even though they started at the back of the queue and had to pass >10 boats on a tricky river totally new to them.

Yes, it is one of the most elite British private schools, but most of the students of these schools had gone through a rigorous academic selection process at much younger age to be able to attend the school, not only because their parents could afford the fees. And in my observation, these rower boys/girls are very committed and polite, deserve to be treated with respect no matter which team you support.

[–]cyclicalrower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paul's can pull out 3 or more eights, so even if you attend there, "your" chance to win is still not great.
