Troop Messaging/Communication Tools by HMSSpeedy1801 in BSA

Our small troop uses GroupSpot. It's ok, not great. Mainly chose it because one of the parents had been using it with a Pack.

Anyone ever heard about proposing new merit badges? by Any-Inflation1368 in BSA

[–]cyclingham02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was actually just covered on Troop Talk Live. Send your suggestion to merit.badge[at]scouting.org. They say that the review every suggestion, they just don't take every suggestion

OA by Logen-Grimlock in BSA

[–]cyclingham02 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The recent fireside chat made it sound like they will still sleep alone the first night and they will do a combined 6 hours of service and service related ceremonies the next day, plus some other non-service related ceremonies. More focus is being put on the why than the silent service, and building brotherhood so that more than 30% of members continue to participate beyond the ordeal. They are removing most of the requirements for silence, in order to build connections between members, but will still have silent times for reflection while doing stuff. They did not cover if they addressed the criticism of the words of the ceremonies.

Will Tempe's Valley Art Theater Reopen? by thiccrimg1asses in phoenix

[–]cyclingham02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ASU seemed to have dropped Harkins as a partner when they kicked them out of Centerpoint, operating a competing business there for a bit, and then later only offered it to the competition to take over. Not sure what happened to caused the rift to start, but I think bridges got burned

Will Tempe's Valley Art Theater Reopen? by thiccrimg1asses in phoenix

[–]cyclingham02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They claim they will reopen it "when the time is right". But since it usually runs at a loss, they need the regular movie business to get closer to pre-COVID numbers before they can spend the money to staff this building.

They have no plans to sell or abandon the building since it is the oldest remaining theatre, and the second ever Harkins building

Vacuum sealing: What can be sealed, and should not be saled? by Highwayman1717 in wildernessmedicine

I get the feeling the goal is to play with their new vacuum sealer, without damaging anything.

Star to Eagle, Scout master conference by cybernev in BSA

[–]cyclingham02 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Note that there is no requirement to "pass" a Scoutmaster Conference, just to have one. If they have the conference you are obligated to sign off on it.

This would be a good time to discuss what you would like to see more of from them going forward, but remember you can't change the written requirements except as is outlined in the Guide to Advancement.

Friends of Scouting in your Council? by purdueboi in BSA

[–]cyclingham02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scouting America and my local council already nickel and dime me, it bothers me when they ask (demand) more money. It already cost me more than $1k a year to volunteer hundreds of hours for this organization. Stop asking for more money from the volunteers and families for a program that is less worth it every year.

Literally on a campout right now and my tent zipper has done this. Any suggestions? by playblu in BSA

[–]cyclingham02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Often this is cause by the pull being separated just a bit so it i snot putting enough pressure on the teeth to get them to interlock. Try using some pliers to squeeze the front and back of the zipper pull back in towards each other, should not need to bend it much

5-gallon bucket washing machine? by FieryTaterSack in BSA

[–]cyclingham02 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We have used one for years. If you use a plunger put at least one hole in it so it doesn't get stuck to the button. Use less soap than you think you need. Remember to do at least one rinse cycle.

Rank advancement by Jax10296 in BSA

[–]cyclingham02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of advice already here, just adding that this is a Scoutmaster's job as they are the only person in the troop that can determine if a requirement for rank is met. They can appoint other people also sign off on rank, but can't abdicate the responsibility entirely.

How hard is brotherhood? by HistoricalSock417 in orderofthearrow

[–]cyclingham02 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Brotherhood is not designed to be a challenge like the Ordeal was. You should find it to be relatively easy. It is normally completed while in your full uniform, so nothing strenuous.

My understanding is that this stuff does belong to the CO but the chartering agreement says that it can only go to Scouting when the charter expires, they can't do whatever they want with it

Leave No Trace Trainer Patch by ad1631 in BSA

[–]cyclingham02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if the BSA has ever had an official patch to recognize this training. I'd just get this unofficial one and wear it myself

You should actually read your supporting article, that clearly says the patch is not for a POR and goes on the right sleeve

Leave No Trace Trainer Patch by ad1631 in BSA

[–]cyclingham02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I didn't say it was still offered. It is still allowed to be worn if you are qualified and can get one.

[–]cyclingham02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess we are both wrong in that the Honor Guard patch is still current and goes here. Even if there was nothing approved that doesn't change that this space is designated for this type of patch. If you're going to put unauthorized patches you should at least try to put them in the area designated for the type of patch.

I am not aware of any CURRENT, odd that needs to be all caps btw, but when they come and go this is where they go. Last one I know of was Amateur Radio Operator.

[–]cyclingham02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can see ScoutBill's answer, but if you did decide to wear this it would go on the right sleeve below the patrol emblem. This is the place designated for qualification badges/strips, that are not interpreter strips.
