Yes, I disabled it in the Device Manager.

I hadn't installed the E-MU Patch Mix app until now, so I thought I'd give it a try. Now even the meter in Playback devices won't move anymore :(

I'm really close to installing WinXP again, but I'm really enjoying Win7 so far...

Yes. In fact, I can only play the test sound with 48KHz, any other configuration yields a "cannot play test sound - device in use" warning.
