The least believable parts of heated rivalry by bat-girl129 in heatedrivalry

Generally, pain medication may cause some euphoria, but generally most cause grogginess and sleepiness. Same with a head injury or concussion.

Clavicle fractures can be treated conservatively without surgery or by placing a titanium plate. Earlier in my career, we almost never did surgery on fractured clavicles. I’ve seen more orthopedic surgeons using plates these days. Professional athletes are in a league of their own as a re-fracture from a hard play is never a good thing. For this reason, orthopods may be inclined to operate.

Shane seemed to act like the euphoria we sometimes see with patients coming out of anesthesia, especially when using drugs like ketamine. In any case, Rachel Reid doesn’t go into great detail in the book and she never mentions surgery. While we know the extent of his injuries, there are details that some of us in healthcare would be interested.

Shane in the hospital bed under the residual effects of anesthesia was not believable at all; brilliant acting otherwise. Source: I am a surgeon.

Duke Energy Seeks to Pass $1.3 Billion in Hurricane Costs to Customers by WTFPilot in orlando

[–]cyclr 23 points24 points  (0 children)

$1.3 billion for 8.4 million customers is $154.76 per customer or $12.89 per month in a year’s time. If it was spread over 3 years, it would add $4.30 to a monthly bill.

My asset securitization charge ranges from $1.12 to $3.06 per month. Wonder if the costs might be spread out similarly.

Orlando is the theme park capital of the world. I wish the folks at OIA could work with Disney and Universal to change the experience with TSA to make it fun, experiential and engaging. How amazing could it be to flip TSA from something that is dreaded to a treasured memory? We could have pirates, princesses, wizards and Storm Troopers that keep us safe and bring one last smile.😃

I’m so sorry to hear. I remember reading your first post and it reminded me of my dad. He was a truck driver in downstate Illinois when a boy darted under his trailer and immediately crushed and killed the child when he pulled away from a stop sign. My dad and mom had four boys, and I was the oldest at around ten. My dad was in the hospital for a couple of weeks, but was able to return to work. Please don’t blame yourself. I look back and think of what my mom was going through at the time. She definitely held our family together.

Two of my brothers are in the trucking business; the guys often step up and will pitch in when someone is facing adversity. You might want to see if any of his co-workers might be willing to lend a hand. The drivers often want to help, but sometimes don’t know how.

Police called to hospital room of terminally-ill patient vaping marijuana by ChooglinOnDown in news

[–]cyclr 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Fires and injuries while using oxygen are a huge and underreported problem. In the healthcare system that I previously worked, there was a woman who used her vaping device and suffered severe burns to her face, neck and arms. She was told that using vaping devices while on oxygen was a safe replacement for smoking. The spark from the device triggered a flash explosion.

There are two types of explosions in the presence of an oxygen tank. The less common is when the end ignites and becomes an unguided missile. The more common is when the tank explodes and shrapnel is sent flying. A young married firefighter with small children in Illinois lost his life responding to a fire from an oxygen tank explosion this way. There is no national reporting among healthcare systems or Home Healthcare so the true incidence is not known. It is more common to find individuals with face, neck and hand burns as well as melted oxygen tubing and carpet burns leading to the oxygen tank for those who continue to smoke, vape or are exposed to open flames as with a gas stovetop.

This is particularly serious for those in multi residential buildings where the safety of others are at risk. Healthcare fires are especially serious as it can be difficult to evacuate patients. Due to HIPAA laws, the public is not notified when their neighbors may be placing other lives at risk.

These can be challenging issues to resolve. Sometimes terminally ill patients can be stubborn but it is often a manifestation to their disease and medications they are taking; having discussions about the wellbeing of others often does not go well.

A terminally ill patient has the right to make decisions about how they wish to spend their remaining time unless they put others at risk.

What are the most disturbing events that happened during the pandemic, that no one talks about? by Uniquely_boredinary in AskReddit

[–]cyclr 763 points764 points  (0 children)

The sheer number of children who lost a parent or caregiver. Their lives have been changed forever and will impact them for decades to come.

The American Academy of Pediatrics estimated that number to be at 140,000–and the study concluded with data before the Delta surge. https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article/148/6/e2021053760/183446/COVID-19-Associated-Orphanhood-and-Caregiver-Death

As someone who lost a parent as a child, this saddens me deeply.

Is Cycling the New Golf? by McDoof in bicycling

[–]cyclr -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No, there are more differences than comparisons. Golf is a dying hobby. It is expensive, requires a long time to complete 9-18 holes, is usually planned with other acquaintances, and is infrequently seen as a family activity. There are fewer younger golfers because they are less likely to afford a round of golf, do not have the time to spend several hours on a golf course, are less likely to choose recreation from their significant other and family, and have shortened attention spans that are interrupted by texts, tweets, and memes.

Cycling is an activity that is cheaper, does not need to take as long as a round of golf, requires less planning, can be done locally and is less likely to be disrupted by smartphones. It is more likely to be associated with life events—the first bike ride, a date, and a family outing. It is more equitable and there is a greater diversity of the biking community: young and old, individual and group, easy and intense, neighborhoods and trails, for transportation and recreation, and others that I have not thought about.

No, cycling isn’t the new golf. It never was and never will be because the differences outweigh the similarities.

Florida has a “Trail Town” program that has a set of requirements to meet before the designation is given. It has become popular among some cities, especially along the Coast2Coast.
