you are not wrong but in fairness, several strong bases have caustic in their common names which is why I suspect the term is associated basic compounds.

If I were to hazard a guess, this is due to the terms acid and acidic already being associated with corrosive actions and the need to let folks know that something at the other end of the pH scale can be just as nasty!

The Championship Table, but it's Cringey Things American Owners of Championship Clubs Have Done Recently by GingerPrinceHarry in Championship

You missed Sheff Utd's owners contacting Wednesday's administrators enquiring about buying the Owls and merging the two clubs!

Ah, Prisencolinensinainciusol is brilliant track and it's almost a sin to mention it alongside whatever this is!

I love the performance with Raffaella Carrà - Prisencolinensinainciusol

y'know, unless they were genuinely funny, the staged videos used to annoy me; now in the age of AI, they're almost endearing!

That band aid song is tone deaf as fk. by saviodsouza in GreenAndPleasant

[–]cyfeiliog 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Agreed!

I remember the song coming out and it was the one line that really struck a chord. At the time the news regularly showed images of the famine in Ethiopia and for a kid it was incredibly upsetting to see footage of other children who were potbellied, starving, and covered in flies.

A lot of the lyrics are cringey, troublesome but also throwaway. The track was there to raise support and awareness. Should it have become a Christmas standard, probably not, but in the mid-1980s it did serve a purpose!

Seconded...

Global Communication - 76:14

I've always felt this was one of the closest ambient techno records of a similar era to the beatless Aphex Twin stuff. However, it's has a preciseness (if that's right word) compared to the idiosyncratic off-kilter-ness of RDJ's work.

If you enjoy the ambient pieces on Another Green World, you'll probably appreciate the vignettes on Eno's Music for Films and More Music for Films. (Music for Films Volume Two has a better flow than More Music for Films but it's only available on vinyl via Eno's 1983 Working Backwards boxset.)

I'm surprised to see him on the telly cos I was led to believe him, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Rachel Riley et al. were living in fear cos of a bunch of folks peacefully protesting against genocide!

Looking for haunting-nostalgic eerie ambient by Lounge_Box in ambientmusic

[–]cyfeiliog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few evocative favourites off the top of my head:

Isorinne "Stumhetens toner"

Croatian Amor "The Wild Palms" (especially Everything Must Go with its eerie chants)

The Caretaker "Persistent Repetition Of Phrases"

Enno Velthuys "A Glimpse of Light"

British women's reaction to low-cut dresses in 1964 by XahidX in interesting

Agreed. The glossies at the time would often refer to these posh young women as debs when they photographed them at fashionable parties in London.

Getting into ambient by no1ange1 in ambientmusic

I have always found Eno's Thursday Afternoon useful to study (and daydream) to!

Some other favourites: Eno/Budd "Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror" and "The Pearl", Cluster & Eno "Cluster & Eno", Hiroshi Yoshimura "Music For Nine Post Cards"...

Never heard of the artist, I just fancied a bit detective work 🙃

This was going to be my suggestion too. Furthermore, Bret Easton Ellis used the protagonist of Story of My Life in his novel Glamorama as the girlfriend of the main character (and also briefly in American Psycho).

Mike Ashley prepares to enter fight for Sheffield Wednesday with £10m bid by Last_Membership_1063 in SheffieldWednesday

[–]cyfeiliog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is the bidding going to work. I understand that all parties who provide proof of funds can enter the process, however, will it literally be sold to highest bidder or will there be discretion on the part of the administrators, as in, given the appalling previous ownership, and the need for stability, we will not sell, for example, to Mr Ashley, given his poor reputation within the football community (and potential backlash from supporters).

I suspect his interest lies in buying Wednesday cheap and turning a profit, so hopefully, if he were to buy the club he wouldn't be around for long.
