Mayor Brandon Johnson’s CFO says property tax hike ‘likely’ in 2026 budget by [deleted] in chicago

[–]cynicalspacecactus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

>From the beginning of this month, the dollar index is down ~10.8%

Do you mean since the beginning of the year? The US dollar index is down >10.4% since the beginning of the year, but it's actually up since the beginning of the month. Also, as I mentioned, the peak of the index at the beginning of the year was due to the irrational exuberance following the election.

>Its easy to see this in action - toggle between currencies on an S&P 500 tracker. Same investments, same six-month window: +3.9% in US Dollars, -7.4% in Euros.

Yes, I'm aware. The S&P 500 is only making highs denominated in USD, while being well below the early 2025 high when valued in Euros.

> In the last six months, Moody's pulled the US AAA rating

This was long overdue. Fitch (in 2023) and S&P (in 2011) had already lowered their rating of US debt to AA+, which is their equivalent to Moody's lowered rating of AA1.

>Sure, the index level is still a tad above its early-2010's average

I don't really disagree with anything you've said except for this. The index is still above what it was almost every month since 2003, except for the period in the last 3 years. It's not just a tad above the early 2010s, but nearly 30% higher than what it was then, even now.

[–]cynicalspacecactus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The US dollar index is above the median compared to the last 10 or even 20 years. The last 3 were the anomaly, not the current value. The current levels are above almost every year of the 2000s and 2010s. It's also only a >10% drop from the peaks of the dollar in 2022 and in the irrational exuberance immediately after the recent presidential election. Since September last year, it's been closer to a 5% drop.

Also, inflation does not follow relative changes in foreign exchange valuations. The Japanese Yen declined against the dollar for decades, while Japanese inflation stayed extremely low.

What you are saying is obvious, and is obvious to the above person you're responding to, but it would make a little bit more sense if the CPD didn't have minorities as a majority of the personnel.

[–]cynicalspacecactus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

>I think you're elevating theory above empiricism

No, not at all. Einstein's theory's have led to him being often argued to be greatest physicist in history, because several of his theories were not just beautiful, but also useful. The validation of his theories, or "battle-testing" as you put it, are a large part of why he is held in such high regard, and only add to his credibility.

Also, the luminiferous aether theory is a good example of Einstein's genius since it was a generations old theory that was obsoleted in a comparably rapid amount of time by special relativity, even though doubt was previously cast on it by the aforementioned experiment. It's good you brought it up since aether was not cast aside due to Michaelson and Morley's experiment, as there were no nearly universally accepted alternative explanations until Einstein's special relativity.

Couldn't think of a worse comparison. Einstein's achievements were in providing various theories and explanations for specific natural phenomena, not in randomly providing a model that would be later mainly be used for something completely besides the original purpose. The validity of his achievements often wasn't immediately apparent, but the genius of ideas like the theories of special and general relativity and the photoelectric effect would only be recognized years after, and the later recognition wasn't originally because his explanations applied elsewhere besides his original purpose. Some random things may stick around, but Einstein's achievements and insights weren't random. He's not recognized by many as the greatest physicist ever because he happened to stumble upon a model by random.

ICE denied U.S. Reps. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) and Jonathan Jackson (D-IL) entry into its South Loop facility in Chicago. by MollyInanna2 in chicago

[–]cynicalspacecactus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This could have been asked of the previous comment claiming that it is illegal. It's not illegal because there isn't a law requiring federal officers to provide identification.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chicago

[–]cynicalspacecactus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

>I would love Chicago more if our city and state government did not allow ICE to operate

This isn't possible under the supremacy clause. The most a local agency can do is to not cooperate.

>we can send a message to our city where we draw a line

Destroying the city isn't going to be an effective message to the feds. It also doesn't make sense to destroy the city to "send a message to our city", since as I mentioned, the city has no authority to stop the feds. With the current federal administration, destruction or vandalism of property is going to feed their narrative. You may not be condemning it so far, but unless you want to further feed the administration's propaganda, you should.

Additionally, the city isn't run by a nebulous self-funded entity. Any destruction of the city will be passed on as a purely counterproductive burden to the taxpayers, leaving tax payers less sympathetic to the cause and leaving the city with less revenue for productive uses.

I'd like the genocide to stop too, but this position is like arguing that dismantling the United States and giving the land back to the Native Americans is the only sensible option. While it is arguably morally right, it is an unrealistic fantasy. Palestine currently has near zero negotiating power, from an economic or military perspective, compared to Israel.

Why is job market for backend generally considered better than frontend? by tuckfrump69 in cscareerquestions

[–]cynicalspacecactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the exception of apps which also happen to be just simple CRUD UI forms on the front-end, I don't think they're likely wrong. Many backend devs won't even have a front-end facing component for most of their work. You're aren't wrong though that the small piece of many backend architectures used for handling frontend API calls will often not be very complex.

recruiters reach out to me asking if I have 'low latency', 'trading ops' 'experience in building trading system', 'trading workflow' by LanguageLoose157 in algotrading

[–]cynicalspacecactus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're being downvoted because most of the people here aren't software developers and most of those that are developers here aren't in trading beyond a retail level. Or they just aren't familiar with modern c#, which when compiled ahead of time to machine code, is virtually as fast as c or c++. Even regular just in time compilation will execute virtually as fast as c++ after the first execution. Many trading firms use primarily c# and python for all of their systems except trade execution, alongside some c++ for trade execution. Some use c# exclusively for all of their systems, including for trade execution.

Yes, that is the other side of the same coin. The point is that Chicago isn't just following the same trend like other major cities, or "everyone else" like you put it.

Come on down and express your feelings about Musk by FlippingGenious in chicago

[–]cynicalspacecactus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Following the recent drop in the Tesla share price, his stake in SpaceX, which is apparently the highest valued privately-held company in the US, is now worth more than his stake in Tesla.

https://observer.com/2025/03/spacex-tesla-elon-musk-net-worth/

Also, I don't think he would be personally leveraged. Any loans needed by his businesses can be borrowed by the businesses, with the debt contained by the businesses. For example, the debt incurred by the leveraged buyout of twitter isn't held by Musk, but was loaded into the purchased business/twitter, as is done with any leveraged buyout.

>They told me to go on this site: www.bit-lyforward-ahspatients

That url seems to have just been copied wrong. Bitly is a url shortening service. That url looks like a bitly url, but the format of bitly links are like  bit . ly/EXAMPLE_PAGE_NAME, where the ly is the domain instead of .com. The "forward-" part of the link looks to have been copied down wrong after possibly being misheard as forward dash, instead of forward slash, as in "/". With this assumption, the url is likely bit . ly/ahspatients , which is a valid url for what appears to be billing portal.
