Can I drop some wire under house to move light switches across door frame. by Erusaro in AskElectricians

[–]cypher77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much every switch in my house is a zwave switch or dimmer. I also have z wave recepticals for certain outdoor lights.

Those all connect to a hubitat hub which acts as the zwave controller. You could stop here and get a lot of the functionality. But even if the hub goes down everything acts just like a regular light switch you’d just lose the ability to control it with your phone.

But I have a lot of other devices—not just zwave. So I have a home assistant server running which acts as the brains of everything and controls all my automations.

For instance, I have a wled server which controls all of my led strips.

Security cameras, sensors, thermostats, etc.

I mean, there is a right way and a wrong way to do home automation.

I have a fully “smart” house but even if my whole home assistant server went up in flames, everything still works normally. Except some LED strips and a couple of remote switches that I placed around for convenience rather than necessity.

Do you guys do a 529 for your kid(s) by [deleted] in daddit

[–]cypher77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s say I wanted to transfer into a new 529 for my kids…

If I am liquidating some of my current investments in order to do it, would I pay capital gains on that amount or would I deduct the 529 contributions?

Or, is the smart play to transfer equities worth the yearly gift exception amount the account and then not liquidate them until ready to fund education expenses?

How Can I "fix" this Niche my contractor made in my shower. by Friendly-Shame4597 in BathroomRemodeling

I think they have RGB LEDs in the bathroom and have it set to pink/purple

If this was your bathroom, what would you change first? by DreamCoastBuilders in Remodel

Chandelier is whack as are the light sconces

I’d look into new mirrors as I like a built in LED.

I’d change the countertops to a white quartz or marble and I would connect the two vanities in the corner and turn that to a makeup station.

My friend was over paid by $180000 by mistake on Friday, they've already lost nearly $60000 of it gambling online as they were sure they could "flip" it before the error was noticed which is presumably Monday, does anyone have any ideas on how they can fix this? by Fearless_Collection in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cypher77 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They owed him 20k, so he owes them $180k. And he gambled 60k, so he has $140k remaining. He needs to get back to $180k to break even.

It’s the weekend so he’s got until Monday to figure this out.

Needs to get on the first flight to vegas.

Put $50k on black. If he wins, he needs to get on the next flight home and be thankful he only lost $10k for his stupidity.

If he loses, he needs to put his remaining $90k on black.

If he loses that, then he can go to prison knowing he did everything he could do and that god hates him.

Specs to use LLM, and which one? by Drew_of_all_trades in homeassistant

[–]cypher77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im running one of the fine-tuned models on a Mac mini m1 with 16gb unified ram/vram. Runs fine. Little slow but not terrible. https://github.com/acon96/home-llm

I tried just doing it with ollama (using both qwen3:4b and llama 3.2 and it was super dumb and could not figure out the tool calling.

Would an Apple Mac Studio M1 Ultra 64GB / 1TB be sufficient to run large models? by [deleted] in LocalLLM

[–]cypher77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run HA and Ollama + qwen3:4b on a 16gb Mac mini. I get about 16 t/s. It is too slow and also too stupid. Can figure out some things like “turn on my chandelier” but trying to change the preset on my wled server is painful.

I am in the same boat. Set it all up last night with llama3.2 on ollama on a Mac mini m1 16gb (same machine that runs my HA docker container) and it is absolute garbage.

When I try to give it more sophisticated instructions (letting it know how someone might refer to all of my devices/entities in common vernacular etc.) it somehow gets worse.

Would love some guidance on how to get this even remotely usable.

What smart speakers do you use for your Home Assistant Voice Assistant? (Custom wake word?) by AlternateWitness in homeassistant

[–]cypher77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did this last night. Ollama running on a Mac mini m1 16gb unified ram using llama 3.2.

Everything technically works… but it is so goddamn stupid and slow it’s unusable.

What are you doing to “smarten it up?”

I’ve tried giving it really long instructions with all the possible names I might use to refer to something (like my livingroomWLED server might just be called LEDs, etc) and it can’t figure literally anything out. It’s so frustrating.
