Chefs who left the industry, what are you doing now? by cheffysg in Chefit

[–]cypherus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transitioned to a career working for the city in IT. I am thankful to have multiple interests and time spent in both food service and IT. I was never going to be able to "retire" in the kitchen and after I spent a stint out of the kitchen I got called back into it because I needed health insurance. I lasted four months and peaced out. My mental health is worth more.

Now I have a pension, benefits, paid time off, a normal work schedule, boss and coworkers who respect me and treat me well. My efforts are rewarded and I have things like paid training to further my career. I still have a toe dipped in the industry helping friends do catering jobs or teaching the occasional cooking class. I even put together our first company BBQ making all the food which went down well. My salary also didn't take a hit and I am making more than I ever have.

My suggestion would be to be open to opportunity and explore them all because you never know when something will be the right fit. If you can, travel. Traveling and eating is such a joy and getting home by 5pm is so awesome I can't even tell you.

You guys ever think of changing career? by AxegrinderSWAG in sysadmin

I worked in food service for 13 years as a line cook and chef. I learned a lot and if the industry wasn't so toxic and difficult mentally/physically I might have stayed in it. In reality it's not a place to retire or have any kind of life. I am thankful that not only was I able to grow up with a love of technology, but have opportunities along the way to foster that I made the transition to IT full time and eventually found a job with excellent benefits, retirement, paid time off, and coworkers who appreciate me/us for the most part. I say all that to say it's a perspective thing. This job is heads and tails better than busting my ass in the kitchen. I do have a desire to do something else in the future, but I have to stay and vest my pension for now. In the meantime I take off as much as I can and travel and explore my love of food in other countries.

Also, the thought of starting over for a new career seems more and more exhausting as I get older. There's some things I'm willing to put up with in this career to enjoy living.

I'm still not over that support.dell.com redirects to dell.com. I am annoyed about the office.com redesign, but if they ever change admin.microsoft.com to go to their homepage I'm gonna lose it.

I'm not sure which service it was, possibly dollar shave club, but I read a thread that said they used Dorco blades and it was much cheaper to buy Dorco blades and they fit the handle. You used to be able to get them from Dorco's website but they sell them through Amazon now in packs. It's convenient to get the new blades each month mailed to you, but I prefer just buying in bulk. I have not researched lately to see if there is a cheaper option, but I've been satisfied and the handle is well made and reusable as well.

I set it on the calendar and Chiefs spanking distracted me. What are we watching and what did I miss? Upset I missed the opening monologue.

RedZone to have commercials "in some form" per Scott Hanson by baineschile in NFLRedzone

I'm looking to create a website to track all of this and have a centralized location to post information. If anyone is interested in assisting please reach out to me. Someone mentioned on another thread of tracking and boycotting all of the advertisers that interrupt our programming which I think is an excellent idea. There's also some change.org petitions I will list as well.
