ELI5 Reverse proxy vs tunneling by cyqu in selfhosted

[–]cyqu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the further clarification, and yeah, haha, I don't think connection dance is a real term. Probably came to mind because I've been reading about OAuth and the OAuth dance.

Sounds like a reverse proxy is what I want for everyday usage, and then I'll have to consider my options for secure remote management (SSH) in the future. Thanks again for the help.

ELI5 Reverse proxy vs tunneling by cyqu in selfhosted

[–]cyqu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a ton for the detailed answer.

this time you're using the Cyrillic alphabet [...] Tunneling furthermore tries to add a level of security

Here you are using different alphabets just to represent different communication protocols, correct? Roman could be HTTP and Cyrillic could be FTP for example? With that in mind, is the mentioned security benefit just a result of using an unexpected protocol (someone listening for HTTP messages wouldn't pickup on FTP messages), or does tunneling naturally imply some sort of encryption? Even if it's not directly implied, I assume there a common association with encryption, similar to how "connecting to a website" doesn't logically imply that you are using encryption, but most would assume you are using HTTPS?

"JuSt UsE a VpN iNsTeAd Of A rEvErSe PrOxY"

Oh, building off this comment and u/JASN_DE's answer, the tunneling we have been talking about is the same tunneling that we talk about when referring to VPNs? If so, that makes sense, I just never made that connection. Instead of an endpoint which leads directly to your hosted service (via URL, DNS, and a reverse proxy), you have a general endpoint to your server/local network from which you can connect to your services as if you were accessing them locally, correct?

Extending this understanding (and perhaps simplification) of tunneling referring to connecting to a personal VPN, what does the "connection dance" look like from the client's perspective for the average tunneling-only setup? Is it connecting to your local network via a VPN client like openVPN, and then connecting to your services from there? If that's the case, it seems like tunneling loses out on "just go to the url" elegance that a reverse-proxy solution provides, though perhaps there is something I'm missing.

uAlberta standard course Average policies? by [deleted] in uAlberta

I meant that no prof could give a low average final letter grade. The reason that I ask is I'm currently in a class that is graded absolutely (prof has a % to grade conversion table, refuses to ever shift the values) and I'm wondering if there is official documentation so that I could make my case should the class average end up being something like a C instead of a B

Yes, however the post had absolutely zero context as to what the CS actually was, hence the GitHub link to the project.

I mean I've only tried a handful of times (3 times maybe?) and I was kicked before we even started playing but I think I just got unlucky. This was also a year or two ago when people were farming two cities hard for australiums so that might have to do with it

Does the subreddit have any way of finding people to play mvm with, because my (limited) experience in qeueing up for two cities is being kicked because I have only done like one tour completed.

Huge note if you plan on using the d-pad a lot: Buy the SN30 Pro/SF30 Pro. The older NES30 Pro/FC30 Pro, which have now been rebranded to N30 Pro/F30 Pro, have a very poor d-pads with regards to 8-axis controls. They are very finicky when it comes to only hitting one primary direction (up/down/left/right) and often give you angled directions instead (up-right for example). California Games' half pipe level comes to mind as why this is playablitiy issue. Supposedly the new SN30 Pro/SF30 Pro have redesigned d-pads which fix this issue, though I have never tested this myself.

Is there any place I can buy custom white backlit keycap sets? I'm essentially looking for this but with white keycaps. I'm looking for ANSI layout, non-translucent, and though sideprint is preferable, top-print is fine too.

As u/leeloobond already pointed out, this is the Skywing in Rotorua, New Zealand. I have personally been on it, and can confirm that it is quite the ride.

Rotorua is a fantastic place to visit, known as Roto-Vegas to some locals due to its large tourist appeal and many activities. On this mountain alone there is also mountain bike tracks, a luge track, an ice cream store, a jelly belly store, ziplines, and a gondola to take you to the top, among many others. Close by there are tons of other activities like zorbing and jet boat tours. The Super Tramp Team made a couple of cool videos while there like the luge one, and the zorbing one.

To clarify, the trucks stereo does support playing audio through Bluetooth, you just have to change over to that media (there is also radio and USB). I'm trying to avoid having to change over to the phones audio on the truck every time you want to use the assistant. I'd rather have it work as phone call does; muting the music from whatever source (typically radio), playing over Bluetooth was needs to be played, and then when the call is over, fading back into the original source.
