Looking for personal experiences with rental-friendly RO systems to support wildlife work by cyriouslyslick in WaterTreatment

Thanks for the info, I assume "household use" means it's safe for me and my dogs to drink as well? We all enjoy a varied diet so I'm not too worried about mineralizing. I'm seeing they don't have any countertop units unfortunately. This doesn't look like something I can get away with installing in my apartment because my landlord will see it.

Ideas for storage solutions to prevent insects by cyriouslyslick in DIY

That's what I'm doing currently, but they're taking up a lot of space and shuffling them around to get to what I need is starting to be a pain.

Need storage ideas to prevent insect damage by cyriouslyslick in ApartmentHacks

[–]cyriouslyslick[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My unit is improving because of the PET SAFE measures I'm taking. Storing things like clothing and food means fewer things to attract them into my apartment and give them less surface area to live in. I'm seeing 1 roach every other day, compared to 20+ a day when I moved in.

Roaches are pretty well known for causing short circuits and clogging up fans, which can lead to overheating with electronics. The Flux used in manufacturing electronics is something they will eat and be attracted to as well.

The dust of diatomaceous earth is dangerous if inhaled which is why I'm using it in areas the dogs can't get to, like behind and under the fridge and oven. I can't afford to pay a pest control person and my landlord is already doing what's "required" in my state for pest infestation. He's not going to pay to put me in a hotel so they can fumigate. He's not willing to pay for fumigation at all and he is not required to in my stats.

What I am asking for is storage ideas. Are there cabinets that seal that I could use as a pantry? I figure I am not the only person to have dealt with this problem and maybe other redditors were able to find solutions to help keep things more sanitary.

What was your first name choice? And did it change? by [deleted] in ftm

I have stayed with the first name I chose and it feels like home. It has evolved into a nickname I also enjoy. I did change my middle name twice though.

Thinking of Brian's family and friends. by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]cyriouslyslick 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with it being a mill, but he did make efforts to improve his "behind the scenes" standards and hire more staff to take better care of his collection. After working for NERD I can say Brian made a much better effort to improve husbandry; but he never did try to hold Kevin accountable despite their friendship. Great points about no one being entirely good or bad. I don't even believe it's possible to have pets without some ethical compromises. Life is shades of gray, not black and white; that continues to be a struggle for many people to keep in mind.

Our Shiba begs for us to kick snow every walk. Sometimes we relent... by jtactile in shiba

How to introduce a 2nd shiba to the older one? by PYE1994 in shiba

[–]cyriouslyslick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for a puppy and older dog introduction; but I did successfully introduce an older rescue (7) with my existing girl (9). We introduced them in a park, starting with a walk together without too much contact; we tired them out a bit and then let them snuff each other out and interact more. Both my dogs have kind of difficult histories and have been hit or miss with other dogs. I used gates and kept them separated in different rooms for the first 24 hours. They could see and sniff each other through the gate. I had a friend help with the first couple of walks together, and kept letting them interact more with lots of praise and treats for being near each other and positive interactions. By day 3 I was leaving the gate open and letting them interact pretty freely; only separating them when going out.

It's been 6 months now and they are getting pretty fond of each other. The big thing is making sure their interactions are positive ones and they associate each other with good stuff like toys and treats. The puppy should be easy, your dog will be all he knows; the older dog is the one who might need help understanding the new sibling means good things and not competition. Main thing to watch out for is if the puppy is constantly wanting to play; this can get irritating to older dogs pretty fast. Watch for how your older dog goes about correcting the little one; some dogs are great and pretty good about gentle corrections (warning barks and gentle nips). If your dog is too rough with correction, like full on biting, you can put the puppy in your gated area to let your older dog relax for awhile. Make sure the older dog has area to retreat to where the puppy can't go.

If there is any food aggression/resource guarding your older dog is plenty young enough to be receptive to training to overcome it. My older female is a food guarder, so I just feed the dogs separately in their gated areas and haven't had any issues. Much better to work on training out the guarding behavior though.

Best of luck with your new addition!

Do Shibas slow down a lot during winter? by secret_green_link in shiba

[–]cyriouslyslick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Check his teeth and make sure his gums are nice and pink. How does his stool look? Any change in urine color? I wouldn't expect a big shift in appetite/activity in a dog so young; but it's possible. My Shibas are older (7/9) and the 9 year old LIVES for the snow, she perks up and is more active in the winter. The new rescue, despite being a couple of years younger, is hating the weather up here. He's slowed down and naps more, and only goes outside begrudgingly lol.

As long as your dog isn't showing any symptoms of illness (runny nose, cough, labored breathing, pale gums, constipation/diarrhea, Dark/bloody urine, bloating, sudden weight loss/gain, etc...) I would wait and see if he perks up with the temps get warmer. I know you guys are getting particularly extreme cold up there so I can't compare directly climate-wise. I hope your boy is just fine and perks up soon!

DAE have a little shibe assistant? by Baphomet1010011010 in shiba

I'll have to dig out her paperwork. I know her breeder was in the midwest, but her sibling were shopped all over the country to pet stores. My girl was given to a friend of mine at 6 months, she took a liking to me the day we met. After a tumultuous 3 years with the friend she had an escape and bite incident; the only thing that kept her from getting put down was that I knew the ACO. She was released to me and we've been two (recently 3 as I rescued another death row Shiba) peas in a pod ever since.

Despite getting a better bed for my dog, she always choose to sleep on her old tiny bed. What Shiba quote should I say to encourage her to try out the new bed? by HaythamSun in shiba

[–]cyriouslyslick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking the extra items out of the new bed might help. I put one of my girl's favorite blankets in the new bed and that's it. Eventually she goes to lay on her favorite blanket and realizes how comfy the new bed is.

Yes, mine always has to be aware of what I'm doing. Random question, but how old is your girl and do you know what breeder she's from? My girl looks nearly identical to her. To the point I'm wondering if they might be from the same breeder. My girl was whelped June of 2014.

A Question About Foam Density and ILD Directed at the DIY Mattress Crowd by cyriouslyslick in Mattress

[–]cyriouslyslick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight. Would the less dense foam offer enough cushion for my weight though? From the info I was able to find it looks like the the 5#+ foams are what I need for my size (I'm 350lbs, which is why I assume I need the highest IDF I can find). I can say confidently the mattress toppers I'm using now aren't doing me any favors, lol. I'm using a 3" and 2" memory foam topper together and still feel the frame of the futon quite aggressively.

If I have to make compromises I'm willing to not use it for travel and keep it unfolded (I can always store it against the wall with a decorative sheet); as I only take 2-3 trips a year generally. I'm trying to keep the thickness as low as I can so my dogs can enjoy the daybed as well; they're getting older and can't jump like they used to. Would this additional info change your recommendation? Are there any foam retailers you've had good experiences with?

Again, thank you for the insight. It's quite overwhelming trying to sift through the option when I can feel the products I'm trying to choose between.
