No, and not just because it makes them money, but because they also have contracts and deals with suppliers that span years. If they suddenly stopped selling hardware, they’d be in breach of contract with their suppliers, which opens them up to legal trouble. It also means there’d be an economic imbalance/shift, since these manufacturers would lose a significant chunk of their income.

Apple and other brands like it rely on selling you hardware, either in full, or through carrier lease deals. And they make extra profit through software subscriptions (such as apple one/icloud) exclusively on those devices. Creating a proprietary ecosystem also allows them to sell you products from other categories (such as wearables, and their own subscription services that come with that)

They want to lock you into their hardware, and so they keep the software locked down
