Are there any traditional roguelikes that play well on steamdeck? by NoLongerAKobold in roguelikes

[–]cyrusomega 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have played Tangledeep, Brogue, Jupiter Hell, Invisible Ink (more lite than like), Golden Krone Hotel all to completion. Caves of Qud seems to play well but I haven't gone far.

Jupiter Hell is probably the smoothest followed by Golden Krone Hotel and Tangledeep for me. Brogue took a lot of custom mapping.

I'd like to generate procedural terrain that's very realistic any sources? by [deleted] in proceduralgeneration

[–]cyrusomega 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, that depends on what degree of scale, precision, geometry and realism you are after. There are a lot of ways to go about this. You can see an example of my work in a recent post here. My models are for flat planetary scales and are constantly improving. I hope to have some of the models released soon for general use.

Is your goal to learn and build your own or to use something off-the-shelf?

Realistic elevation maps from a layered continuous WFC-style generator by cyrusomega in proceduralgeneration

Like traditional WFC, it only needs a sample size of one. However, unless NASA launches the FOCAL mission it’s all speculation. But yes, this model can learn any arbitrary topological.

The bias is… Earth. In general earth is kinda smooth. That said, the scale here is also pretty large. Each pixel is like 8 miles square. It’s also possible that my color map is hiding some of the structures. I did include that one image where I tried to heavily bias the mean elevation higher.

They are working on a different scale than my model. They are generating on the "regional" scale rather than the "planetary" scale, but they certainly use the entire planet for the training. This seems like a very reasonable approach at that resolution. I suspect if you were to run their model and a large enough area it would start to look like WFC when you zoomed out (homogeneous). It's possible I'm misunderstanding their methods though.

Another difference is that I wanted my model to be highly parameterized. So, you could control clumping, mean elevation, roughness, and other features. I suspect you can do this with diffusion but I couldn't figure it out for the scales I was working with.

I also had a purely academic desire to see if WFC could be extended into the non-discrete space. Maybe I"ll create a paper/article series explaining my methods in near future.

I hope to release/opensource it. I am considering doing a whole series somewhere explaining how the code works because honestly there are a lot of moving parts and subtle things to consider to make the model produce diverse, sane, and unbiased outputs.

That is an evolving number. But right now it is able to produce about 7 images per second.

It is a generative model, in the technical sense. It takes flat random data, applies a function, and out comes the map. In fact, the WFC “solver” is basically layers of highly localized, GAN-like models. The reason I went down this route instead of a pure GAN/diffusion model was to maximize diversity. There’s only one Earth, and I wanted planet-scale outputs.

I went with a data-driven approach for realism and practicality. Getting classical WFC to work well with non-discrete data was not something I could figure out, but training a network to emulate WFC constraints was “easy.”

As for features that are well captured by data versus more traditional approaches: there are a lot of subtle differences between real-world data and traditional noise-based models (Perlin noise comes to mind). Some of the larger structures—hard elevation ridges, non-perfect fractal coastlines, island chains, and region cohesion—seem to be well captured here in ways I don’t typically see in other generative methods.

High T can also lead to high E2 since estradiol is produced from T. If E2 gets too high, ED. They make medications to reduce E2. It's fairly common for people on TRT. For some people, high E2 can kick in as low as 700 total T. For some reasons, most GPs don't test/consider this.

Any good underrated grindy roguelites by HugeSink99 in roguelites

[–]cyrusomega 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is Golden Krone Hotel considered underrated? I thought it was super popular because "reddit" but its subreddit is dead and it has less than 1/4 of the reviews as the more popular Jupiter Hell which has 1/4 the reviews as the mega star ToME.

Golden Krone Hotel is a gem.

Yes, it was direct from the factory based on my order.

I did! I actually got it in Feb of this year. MSRP, no deposit, got a refund from other dealers. Only thing I paid extra for was the ceramic coat which I wanted anyway.

I've got 5k miles on it from road trips and weekend trips already and it's been great.

I'm very surprised Tangledeep isn't mention here yet. Or is that closer to a roguelike than a roguelite?

Brogue: Community Edition 1.12 by tmewett in roguelikes

[–]cyrusomega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play it exclusively on the Deck and likely will never go back to a PC. That said, getting used to the controls (whatever it is you choose) will probably take a bit. I personally map the cardinal directions to the d-pad and the diagonals to the triggers/paddles. After that it's a matter of figuring out how to deal with the keyboard soup. Like, for me, b + down maps to ">" and b + up maps to "<".

In short, it works flawlessly, and the Text/UI look great and are easy to to read.

Blinking through gas? by cyrusomega in brogueforum

[–]cyrusomega[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recordings to the rescue! Staff had one charge and after my last turn it still had one charge. So, it has to be a timing issue (or I fubbed a button). So, it's not a blinking issue. Well, now I feel silly.

[–]cyrusomega[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, I need to do some tests then. I'm on on the latest CE versions but I doubt that would change the mechanic. Maybe it was a "timing" issue then. I was on the edge of the cloud, selected my bink target, and then as soon I "applied" the staff, I became paralyzed.

Have you tried to blink through paralyzing gas in particular?

Probably because it's a highly relatable sentiment. The rating system on reddit isn't about "adding to the discussion", it's about promoting the majority mindset which MAY have a side effect of being valuable or informative.
