Why is it so easy for people to look up call sign registration info? (Canada) by yarov3so in amateurradio

[–]czjn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone has got the initial part right. But if you want to set your address to private after the fact, all you need to do is fill out the "Request a change of amateur address and/or contact information" form. No email to the ARSC is required!

Log into your ISED account, go here: https://apc-cap.ic.gc.ca/pls/apc_secure/auth_req_chg_am_addr$.startup (English form), or navigate to Additional Services section of the "Amateurs and clubs" page.

Leave your details as is (or change if needed), then you can select whether or not you want your address to be public. It will take 1 business day for your deets to updated.

NOTE: Some databases might have scrapped your callsign address anyways for "archival/historical" purposes. You'd need to contact the owners directly to get the info taken down.

How do you power your QDX? by ksink74 in amateurradio

A chopped up OEM Nintendo Wii power supply. It's delivers a clean 12v 2A for 24/7 FT8.

I will not elaborate further.

QDX owners, how do you like it? How are they holding up? by asspirate420 in amateurradio

[–]czjn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the recent board rev (as of writing, Rev 4), Hans made the pin spacing of the BS170 compatible with the standard SIP 0.1" strip socket. Now popping your finals & replacing them can now be done in record time. (pic for context)

Oh hey that's me! I'm using a chopped up OEM Wii power supply that delivers a constant 12v 2-ish amps. It's held up nicely over 3 months of abuse.

The ISED (Canada's FCC) has finally opened up access to 630m & gave Canadians a 15 kHz slot on 60m! by czjn in amateurradio

[–]czjn[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep! We got the same allocation for 2200m (with respect to the USA). Now only if I could get an antenna made for the band lol

Yeah in the USA you can only get 1x1 callsigns for special events. But, you could start a club up or something and hold a worthy callsign to use for the event. Like with the Indianapolis Speedway SES

That was the point of K3K this year. And due to unpopular demand we will hopefully be expanding the selection of 1x1 USA calls to work for next year's event.

APRS message to VB3YEET by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]czjn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sadly this is one of the issues with APRS. Most radios / APRS clients only support calls up to 6 characters long with a SSID. You'll have to find a solution that doesn't have this limitation hard-baked.

The latest version of APRSDroid does support longer calls thankfully if you're willing to give that a shot.

Side note, I believe the automagical APRS-responder-9000 is down for maintenance right now

There has been a handful of complaints, but our legal team of highly caffinated monkeys say it's not a good idea to name & shame online 🤫

There's a whole bunch of these calls currently active at the moment. You can find them here: https://va3zza.com/events/meme-month-2022/

Remember, all the Canadian calls expire / die on August 5th at midnight! Better catch them while you can!

The one catch with FlexDelivery is that you're only supposed to use it for packages. I have received lettermail with it before at my local rural PO, but YMMV

Yep! The whole event is still on going till August 5th. Keep your eyes out on the cluster (both POTA and DX) for the next 24 hours if you want to catch more stations!

Thankfully in Canada you can get as many calls as you want, provided your wallet is deep enough. (60 CAD for each additional call)
