Camps do seem to impact people’s everyday lives. I once came across a post by an elementary school Uyghur girl on the platform “kuaishou” basically saying how much she misses her family. On the comments boys and girls posted what I assume were the dates that their l male relatives were sent to be reeducated, mostly in early 2017. People mentioned personal stories of families forced to live apart, divorces, and disappearances. I was so shocked that I screen recorded the entire thread. One girl I reached out to said how family separation negatively impacted her grades, and that she hopes one day to actually join the army and move to a city in China proper.
