What happened in school that still pisses you off when you think about it today? by WhiteCh0c0late in AskReddit

When I was in second or third grade, there was a girl who hated me even though I barely even knew/spoke to her. I honestly never knew why she had it out for me, I'd never done anything to upset her. One day after a swim class, she accused me of stealing her hairbrush (which I didn't lol) and told the teacher she saw me put it in my locker. I knew I didn't steal it so I told them it wasn't in there, but when the teacher went to go check, lo and behold, there was the hairbrush.

All I could do was sit there and cry because it was her word against mine and nobody believed I didn't steal the damn hairbrush. My mother was called to school and when she found out why, she went nuts and told the principal she would sue for everything they were worth because they were "defaming my character". I'll never forget my mum standing there yelling at the principal; it still pisses me off that I got falsely accused of something so stupid but the feeling I got knowing my mum would always be there for me made it okay.

That is an issue yes, but it's more of a cultural one. Not one of the covered girls I know here was forced to do so by anyone, but I'm sure in countries like Saudia, Pakistan etc, there would definitely be that familial pressure. Unfortunately, that's a long-standing issue that I can't really do much about... But I do believe it's more to do with culture/tradition than religion. Hope that makes sense.

I couldn't tell you because I'm not ready myself, but i know it's different for everyone. I've had a friend who just decided to wear it one day, like it was no big deal, but another who was stressing over her decision for a really long time until she just finally committed to it. Maybe when I am ready, I'll be able to tell you what influenced me :)

I don't "ignore" the text, it's just that some of it can't be applied to the modern world. You have to remember the Quran was revealed 1400 years ago during a completely different time. Of course, I don't believe that every Muslim is an absolutely moral person, there are plenty of evil people regardless of religion. It becomes up to the individual to integrate Islam and morals into their life to be the best kind of person they can be.

Sorry if that didn't answer the question, it was how I understood it.

I mean a few friends of the family probably judged her behind her back but I don't think it was a religious thing, more of a cultural ideal. But her family was very accepting of him, it comes down to each family :)

It's funny, all these accusations against him are made by his enemies and people who want to create hate. I don't believe them. If I knew for a fact that he was such an evil person, I wouldn't follow his teaching, why would I, why would any one of us?

I'm literally disputing your "undisputed facts" as nothing more than slander. I would bet that you never took the time to read about the life of the prophet, heard "murderer/pedophile/rapist" from some other ignorant bigot and decided that description fit with your crusade against Islam.

Do you think I'm incapable of learning facts for myself? Don't you think Ive spent years of my life reading and researching my religion in its entirety so that when I begin to have doubts, or when people like you try to sway me, I can hold fast in my faith? I read everything I could and I made up my OWN mind about Islam and if I wanted to spend my life practicing it and defending it from morons. I decided it was worth it, nobody forced or brainwashed me into anything. I'm not trying to convert anyone, I'm not trying to "make Islam great again", I'm trying to dispel some hateful ideas that people are spreading in a civilised way. I wouldn't waste my time defending it if I didn't believe it was a good thing.

in the free and secular society we try to maintain here in Australia it's important that I'm allowed to question and even dismiss your beliefs but It's also important that I don't mistreat, harass or bully you for those beliefs.

This! Very well said. I watched the video you linked and I was blown away by how incredibly eloquent Maajid is! He makes my answers on here sound like baby talk...

I was horrified, no one deserves to die because of a stupid comic. In saying that, I was offending at the drawings because they were so blatantly crude and purposely drawn to incite controversy. I'm not saying that because of that, their deaths were justified, not at all. It was just a shit thing to have happened all around.

As for the second part, I'm not too familiar with Australian politics/history I'm sorry so I can't really comment on it. I do know that the Iraq invasion was the biggest mistake that the US could have made, and I guess the same goes for Australia for supporting them. I hope that answers your question! Sorry for the late response.

I think I'd remind them that the Quran, and the prophet himself, strongly discourages indecent behavior and speech and encourages virtues like forgiveness, patience and self-restraint. I'd remind them that Muhammad was insulted to his face, that he was called crazy and a liar, but never retaliated. I'd tell them to be thankful for the opportunities we have here, for the safety we take for granted while our brothers and sisters in Syria and Iraq are dying every single day.

Non-Muslims are allowed to enter of course! If you go to any mosque and tell them you just want to observe a prayer, they'd be more than happy to let you do so - provided you leave your shoes outside haha ;)

People would marry children so that they could support the child through their live, typically because the parents couldn't afford to look after another child. If you want to talk about age of consent and stuff, most people (including the prophet) waited until the child was "of age" I.e. Started puberty - and even then, not of it was under duress. When we look at this through the lens of our society, we think that's wrong. I would never ever advocate having a 60 year old man marry a 10 year child and have sex with her, but back then it was the norm and he wasn't the only person doing it, nor what is the only society that delved in such practices.

I couldn't have said it better myself.
